Kings Landing Historical Settlement, Kings Landing

Kings Landing

In the late 1960 the Mactaquac Dam was built on the Saint John River above Fredericton. This resulted in flooding above the dam, so many homes close to the river would be lost. Luckily some of the historic homes were moved to higher ground and the Kings Landing Historical Settlement was established. The settlement is a re-creation of life as it was in the 19th century in New Brunswick. The staff wear historically accurate clothing and you can see various farming, carpentry, milling, agricultural and social traditions in practice. There is even a working water-powered sawmill and gristmill. The general store sells reproductions of what would have been in the store and you can even buy flour that was ground in the gristmill. There is entertainment and food at the King’s Head Inn as well as other special events through the season. It’s a wonderful glimpse into the past.

Smiling Goat Organic Espresso Bar, Halifax

Untitled

I heard about a new cafe that opened in Halifax that had a Clover coffee brewer. It apparently makes some of the best tasting coffee with a high-tech vacuum press method, so I went in yesterday and had a cup and I wasn’t disappointed at all. It was very smooth and delicious and worth paying a bit more.

It’s a great cafe with a range of organic and fair trade coffees along with some food as well in a cozy atmosphere. I have to go back and have another cup of coffee as it was great.

The Mud Room, Halifax

Untitled

Yesterday I stopped in to the Mud Room before it closes and is renovated and will be reopened under new management. I had my usual dark roast and I bought a couple of bags of beans to have some of the great coffee for a few more weeks.

Since the school where I work moved across the harbour to Dartmouth, I haven’t been in very much at all, but I miss the friendly atmosphere and the strong coffee.
