Directory of Countries

The Travelers' Century Club's official list includes 315 countries as of January 2005. If you've visited 100 or more (no matter how briefly), you're entitled to join the club. Note: not all of the "countries" are sovereign nations in their own right, but have been included according to criteria including geographical, political or ethnological distinction from their parents. For the same reason, they don't correspond exactly with the 43Places hierarchy. The places are ordered by region and, within the regions, alphabetically. You can find places as follows: Pacific Ocean: page 1 (1.-40.) North America: page 1 (41.-46.) Central America: page 1 (47.) - page 2 (53.) South America: page 2 (54.-66.) Carribean: page 2 (67.-93.) Atlantic Ocean: page 2 (94.) - page 3 (106.) Europe & Mediterranean: page 3 (107.) - page 4 (173.) Antarctica: page 4 (174.-180.) Africa: page 4 (181.) - page 5 (232.) Middle East: page 5 (233.) - page 6 (252.) Indian Ocean: page 6 (253.-266.) Asia: page 6 (267.) - page 7 (316. - as 281. for some reason doesn't exist) In some cases, the order doesn't appear alphabetically, because the places have different names on 43places, or are only represented by one part of the TCC region. Please do not change this list in a way that makes it different from the original list (see below)!

editing pictures?

How can we change the pictures for the countries?

I hardly think some woman sunbathing is the iconic image that should represent all of France….

Why on earth are Hawai’i & Alaska separate countries?

Now I now we’ve all felt like seceding from time to time given the current political regime – but there’s no way they get to count as separate countries just because they’re not attached to the mainland!

I’m not sure how you change the default picture – they’re imported from 43Places and I’m not sure how they’re selected. At a glance, it might be according to the number of cheers awarded?

As for Hawai’i and Alaska, as the list description says, the “countries” are selected by a variety including geography and ethnology, not just political boundaries, on which basis I think you could fairly argue for them being counted separately. In particular, you would have to make distinct trips to visit them – which is the ethos of this particular list.

Incidentally, Hawai’i and Alaska are far from being the only anomalies as far as formal jurisdictions are concerned. There are many more debatable “countries” in the list – but I think that’s one of the things that makes it interesting.

It is the cheers

The most cheered photo is what represents the country. We are looking at aging the cheers to give new photos a chance (or maybe randomizing across the most popular 5 photos).

This list is NOT the United Nations!

I find this list absolutely great because it splits up some large and un-attached geographical countries and states, also political boundaries.

Example: Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Ricao are listed seperately just like Greenland is listed seperate from Denmark and remote islands like Bouvet Isand in the Indian Ocean seperate from Norway in Europe! Vatican City (Holy See) and Taiwan are listed even not members of the United Nations.

What the hell?

Why is Canada listed twice? Also, why is Prince Edward Island (Canada) listed as a separate COUNTRY? It’s a province of Canada – the smallest, in fact! It is not a protectorate, territory, colony, or etc., but is a fully fledged, constitutionally obligated, culturally mainstream province, and has been since 1873 when it joined Confederation. Also, it does not have any cultural differences and/or claims to nationhood, unlike several other areas in Canada. (Although, i have to say I would have a BIG problem if say, Nunavut or Quebec was listed as a separate country.) I think the Alaska/Hawai’i separations are bogus as well; despite their distance they are still American states. This list is a celebration of ignorance and inaccuracy in perceiving both political and cultural realities.

This list is great for advanced travellers

This list is great for advanced travellers, a few locations are listed seperately because of their geographic location. I wish all the large countries were split in this list into their states or provinces. If one has been to Miami, that has not have anything to do with travelling to Hawaii or Alaska!

This list is not perfect. Till someone sorts geographically or alphabetically, we won’t find the errors. There are atleast 2 places missing to bring the total to 315!

Politicians and “tourists” should rather use the simple list: “Countries of the World”!

Big re-order

Ok people. I’ve just put all these places into the order given by the Travelers’ Century Club, added the missing places and deleted the ones that weren’t supposed to be there. Now we have all the 315 countries or “countries” (although the list currently displays the last country as the 316. since for some reason there is no 281. country..).

The intelligence award goes to those who deleted Alaska, Hawai’i and Prince Edward Island.

I think I’m gonna add some comment on the order at the top of the list.

Second Star To The Right And Straight On Till Morning

for #22 New Zealand, i think that’s a really bad picture b/c there are fiddleheads in other places than New Zealand, plus there’s a lot more in New Zealand than fiddleheads. Just saying.

This list has gotten 3 cheers.
