Not worth visiting!

Amish Puppy Mills abound@!

DO NOT VISIT. I live nearby and the amish life that is depicted for tourist is nothing like the reality. Lancaster County has the highest concentration of puppy mills in the United States, 98% of them owned by Amish. Do a google on the Amish and puppy mills. Look at the pictures and read the newspaper articles that come up. Nothing has changed despite attempts by Harrisburg to push through laws. (Google “Daniel Esh” and you will be appalled. His is just one owner of the hundreds of disease ridden mills.)

While the landcape is among the most beautiful in the world, the puppies bred at the mills NEVER see the outside of a wire cages that are stacked on top of each other in dark and dank barns. Visit the counties outside of Lancaster such as Lebanon, Daupin, and Berks.

WHOA THERE!!

Little over the top there, karen ~

There are lots of atrocities here in the states (as everywhere) – puppy mills, kitty mills, homeless people…

But throwing all the Amish into the same label based on the actions of a select few is prejudiced, uncalled for, and truly skewed in perspective. In general, the Amish are the most ethical, hardest-working, and modest people you will find in this world.

And anyway, there are a lot more interesting things to see and do in Lancaster than just visit the Amish.

But heck, you didn’t just black-ball the Amish, you black-balled the whole town for the actions of one small fraction of a small fraction of a very small percent of the population.

Wow.

whoa there?

Yes I have pretty much black-balled the entire community for the actions of a small percentage of the population. Sadly it is the majority of the population who have chosen to ignore what is going on in their own backyards.

As the saying goes, money talks. The Amish have been allowed to continue their inhumane treatment of animals without pressure from the rest of the population because of the money that tourism brings to Lancaster County.

Despite many other and more noteworthy things to see and do in Central Pennsylvania, most people who visit Lancaster County will tell you they came there to experience the Amish Culture. (If you don’t agree, take a trip to the visitor’s center at the Greenfield Exit off Rt. 30. You will be hard pressed to find a brochure that doesn’t refer to the Amish way of life.)

I don’t question that the Amish in general are a hard working, modest people. Ethical? Absolutely not. Hypocritical? Absolutely. Prostituting your religion for tourism bucks and international trade does not seem ethical to me.

My sister posts on the internet for one of the larger Amish families in Lancaster County and I want to send her a copy of your letter. (It is amazing how these Godly people who shun the outside world have no qualms about using a third party to do what God has forbidden them from doing.) I hope that she will find your comments as amusing as I have. You know and I know that the majority of Amish are living double lives.

Amish are trash

The aish continually breed poor quality pups and keep their breeding animals in a state of squander that defies decency. They all should be barred from dog breeding as all they breed is poor quality dogs. They get away with it because people think that religious people wont do anything bad. However, amish are consistently seen interbreeding in incestuous relationships and thats on the human side. Don’t let their “religion” exempt them from humane treatment of animals.
