Chinatown
Worth visiting!
DC Chinatown — 2 hours ago
I was surprised to learn that there was a Chinatown in DC. I’ve been through there a couple of times. It’s interesting to see the signs written in Chinese. There is also a big archway right near the entrance to the Metro station.
It happens to be near the International Spy Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and several other attractions.

Sorry you disliked it. I just got back from a trip there with my wife. We loved it and had a great time.
True, you can find crime in pretty much any big city. I found people to be pretty nice for the most part. Some of them just had different ways of expressing their niceness than the way in which I am accustomed to seeing it.

Obviously a lot depends on where you will be studying/working/meeting people you know. The general rule is to stay on the same side of the river as journeys crossing Zone 1 are expensive and crowded and often delayed. Living close to a station or main bus route is inportant even if you drive because of the cost of parking and Congestion Charge for driving in central London. If possible give yourself a few days to look around before you start a job or course. London is still a collection of small towns, each with its own centre and character.
Look at the Transport For London website
www.tfl.gov.uk for travel information and maps.
Best wishes for your move.

All of London is expensive. The closer in (zone 1/2 of the 6 concentric zones) are the most expensive. The dodgy ghetto areas are the south right down the middle (lambeth, brixton, new cross, lewisham, kennington, peckham rye). The south is cheaper than the north (of the thames). I lived in zone 3 and transit was 100 pounds a month to get into zone 1. The further out you go, especially beyond the M15, the more expensive it will be to get into central london if you plan on working there.
London is the most expensive city in the world (or up there anyway) so anywhere you stay is going to be expensive unless you’re sharing or have a dual income. Good luck!

It’s doable, but a motorcycle drive over that distance is no joke. I’d be nervous going through New York traffic via a motorcycle.
Still, it would be a blast and who knows, you might get a travel book out of it.

Knoxville
Knoxville
Yeah… 6 or 7 days a year is an absolutely good reason to trash a location.
More to the point, it is only for a couple of hours on those 6 or 7 days of the year that the traffic is bad. And, if you know what you are doing, which is not really hard, you can even manage to get where you want and avoid the traffic at the same time. Most people, though, just schedule around it so that it is not a problem anyway.
Being a college town also brings some positive points too. It enhances the cultural opportunities and the youthful vitality of the city, for instance. Knoxville is a good place to raise a family. But then, many places can be. It is simply a matter of what you put into it. You can make it what you want to. Or not. If you prefer to be negative.
