Micanopy

we used to go down to Micanopy to buy the most killer pot—”Micanopy Madness.”

Well, I lived in Micanopy for nine years – I left last year – so I’d say I know the place. It’s a wonderful town – I think our population is around 650? A lot of antique stores and churches. Long dirt roads. I think it’s supposed to be the second oldest city in Florida, after St Augustine. Or thats the local legend. I love it though. It’s beautiful, right over by the prarie, and with lots of trees. For a few years the town hall flew the flag for being “tree city USA” – we take pride in a accomplishments. It’s a place like no other. I deffinately think people should go. If not live there. I don’t think you could get a feel for it without living there, but thats for you to decide.

I’ve been here maybe five or six times. I stayed once at the Herlong bed and breakfast, which is beautiful inside and out. However, it’s much more economical to stay in neighboring Ocala.

This is a wonderful town for those who love to go antiqueing. There’s an amazing little shop filled completely with Italian carved cameos, but the lady who owns it is quite eccentric and reeks of cat piss. The town was the filming site for the movie “Doc Hollywood” in the ‘90s.

This is a nice retreat for those weary of “touristy Florida.” It’s definitely off the beaten path and has an old world appeal. Micanopy has a very relaxed southern pace and an almost disgusting amount of charm. Husbands/boyfriends beware, you will be dragged here (but you can always wander down to the nearby nudie bar truckstop).
