Why I want to go to this place  — 9 months ago

It kind of fell into my lap thanks to skybus and their $30 roundtrip flight from Ohio.

My sister, husband, and I are going to Portland and Boston, however after reading reviews on here of what a hidden gem it is perhaps we will carve away a bit of time in Portsmouth as well.

Argueably one of the best cities in New England. I would say Portsmouth is on par with the small upscale CT suburbs, Greenwich and Stonington and the MA suburbs, Newburyport and Lexington. Summary in three words- Relaxing, clean, and friendly.

Rather the Last time I lived in Portsmouth

I lived in Portsmouth from 1967 when we moved there a month before my 7th birthday. Ten days before xmas in 1973, when I was 13 and in the 8th grade, we drove through the night to start a new life in Mississippi. I thought we were just going there on our way to Seattle, WA, but we stayed there for 5 yrs. Long enough to suck the life out of me that had been born and bred in New Hampshire. Growing up in Portsmouth I was a wandering curious and gregarious child. Living in the wonder of a 300yr old house and exploring the hills and dales of the beautiful world around me. I would follow the tracks into town so I could visit the fishermen on the piers and perhaps catch a fish or two myself. I would ride my bike to the city pool or go all out and ride it all the way to wallis sands, a beautiful little beach that has survived the tides of time.

How this place changed my life  — 1 year ago

My dad and his girlfriend live here. There’s so much to do and the atmosphere is wonderful. If I stay in New Hampshire when I’m older, I’ll definitely settle here.

A review of this place: Shhh, keep it to yourself!  — 2 years ago

I hesitate to offer a positive review of Portsmouth because it has been my sanctuary getaway for the past 8 years. I would hate for it to become overcrowded. Portsmouth is the crown jewel of New England. Nestled between the Maine seacoast and its super cheesy cousin, Hampton Beach, NH; Portsmouth is the quintessential colonial seaside town. Under 3 square miles in size, the downtown is packed with brick buildings featuring restaurants, pubs, outdoor cafes and shops. Think Newport, RI only better. Think Northampton, MA only better. Park all night in their clean, safe parking garage for cheap and head out to explore the charm and culture of the region that is over 350 years old. No matter what your taste for food, there is sure to be a restaurant that will fit the bill. Crime is virtually non-existent and the people are super friendly. Portsmouth is 10 minutes away from the beach and 45-50 minutes away from the White Mountains. If you love the outdoors this is your playground. Travelin’ Jones gives Portsmouth the highest possible score. And you can take that to the bank!!!!
