Skopje is divided into two by the river Vardar. Do not spend your time on the side so called “New City” since it is an unsuccessfull imitation of some European cities. The people can not complete this imitation, they are in contrast.
But go and visit “Old City”, which was founded 550 years ago by the Ottoman Empire. In the old city, most of the people are Turkish and there you see the real kindness and hospitality.

this was my first time to visit s.eastern europe…and a wonderful visit. it was almost like stepping back in time from my cushy western world! i want to do this more often! not for the ‘exoticness’ of it, but to meet people and learn about cultures that are different from mine!
i would recommend visiting the old turkish part of skopje…near the fort. i don’t know the official name of the area, but we had the best food and met the most wonderful people there!
