If you are not on a super strict budget, do an overnight trip to Finca El Cisne. This plantation visit was one of my best experiences during my 6 week trip. You can book the visit from the ViaVia in Copan Ruinas. Finca El Cisne is about 45 minutes from Copan Ruinas (depending on the state of the roads). What you do on the tour, led by the extremely charismatic Carlos Castejon, is horseback riding that includes visits to the coffee and cardamon fields and some exceptional views. You also visit the coffee processing plant and go for a swim in a local hot spring. You are served three DELICIOUS home-cooked meals, all made using food grown at the Finca. Your digs are in a beautiful and luxurious (for a backpacker) ranch house. Such a fun, cool experience! TOTALLY WORTH IT!

Traveling within Honduras can be exceptionally slow and time consuming with infrequent or poor connections…or many connections. Pack your patience!

Honduras was stop #2 on our Central American trek. We spent most of our time in the quietly charming town of Copan, where we took in the Mayan ruins, and the sleepy island of Roatan, where we rode horses along the beach and hubby did some scuba-diving. For great accommodations on Roatan at a very reasonable price, try The Mariposa Lodge!

I have visited Honduras for 5 years. Not all in a row. I go and help doctors communicate by translating between them and people who need medical treatment. I don’t really get to see much of the beautiful places in Honduras. I have mainly spent time in Tegucigalpa. I have visited Sabana Grande nad an orphanage near the border with El salvador but that is it.

    Great experience though

My First time out of the US  — 9 months ago

This was the first country that I went to that was outside of the United States. It was so different than what I was used to in the states. The food, the atmosphere, and the culture to me was something getting used to but I enjoyed it. I went to Talanga and Tegucigalpa. When landing in Teguc it was a little scary because the runway wasn’t that long.

Why I recommend this place to locals  — 1 year ago

    Worth visiting!

Honduras has beautiful natural beaches…the ocean is clean and the water is warm. And the locals are very nice and helpful! Hotel prices are rather cheap, and there is so much to do! You can visit the ruins in Copan (the little town is so nice and homey!), visit the rain forests and see the many tropical birds, or go shopping in Tegucigalpa, the capital.

It’s just a nice place to go and have fun!

My dad plans on visiting this country to this one convention of which is held by the organization where you can sponsor a child in need (I don’t remember the name of the organization). My dad sponsored a child from Honduras and he would get the chance to meet the child. He also invited me to come along (actually more of me telling him that I want to go too). So, we will go sometime in September next year. I will go for about a week or 2 after my big trip to Europe that summer. I will meet him in Honduras. I’m so excited!

The people are very friendly. I had a great time while there. Be sure to check out the ruins and hit the islands off the coast.
