Montana, United States

Mary Hawkins asks,

“I'm going to take the Empire Builder across the upper midwest and plan on stopping in Whitefish for the day. I don't drive well, but I'd like to see the area. What are some cool things to do and good things to see?”

My mother lives in Whitefish! My brother sells real estate there.

It is very quaint…lots of little shops, a micro brewery and of course Big Mountain ski resort is beautiful.

You will be right at the US side of Glacier National Park and the going to the sun highway! If you get a chance please take a tour bus into the park.

It will be worth your whole vacation!

Cool! I think I’m going to do one day in the park [with the bus tour] and another day either wandering around Whitefish or taking a hike in the park.

Thanks for the advice!

Whitefish is a great town, but it doesn’t have as much to offer in the summer as it does in the winter. If you really want to see the sights of NW Montana, you have to visit Glacier National Park. There a number of tours into the park, most famous of which is the red buses (jammers) that leave from the park’s lodges.

I’m definitely thinking that those busses are the way to go. I’ll have just gotten off the train when I go, but they really sound like a good way to see the park, even if I don’t get much exercise in the process…

I lived in Whitefish for three years and you will love it. It is gorgeous. One thing I would strongly recommend is going to Big Mountain Ski Resort. They still have a lot of activities for summer and even if you just go up and look around the view is well worth it. I know in the winter they offer a shuttle but I am not sure if they do in the summer. You might want to go to their website – BIGMTN.com.

The train station in actually very close to downtown so you could walk around there. It’s not very big. A great shop is Sage and Cedar which has really nice bath and body stuff. If you enjoy beer, the Great Northern Brewery was my favorite. I could go on and on, so if you have any more questions, feel free. I hope you enjoy your visit.

Cool! Thanks for the tip! I’ll keep my eye out for those stores.

I think I’m going to do most of my outdooring in the park, but I’ll keep big mountain in mind, especially if they’re running an easy shuttle out there…

Hi,

I am in Libby, Montana. It is along the railway you will be taking. Things to do here in Libby are on my website at: http://www.mtwilderness.com. For the town of Whitefish theres alot of things going on depending on the time of year. The Chamber has a site that will let you know of all the cool things. http://whitefishchamber.com/

Good luck, have fun and take your camera.

Thanks for the links!

I definitely need to buy more memory for my camera… Everyone else’s pics look so good, and I’m a shutterbug.

there’s a ski lodge out through Red Lodge which is on the way to Whitefish, there’s museums that are very neat out there, some fishing, or parks, great area for pictures and site seeing. A lot of nice restraunts out that way as well.

Cool… I’ll keep Red Lodge in mind.

If anyone else is reading this afterwards, I found two good links for Red Lodge:

It looks like it’s a great ski resort in winter…
