It depends on what you are looking for…

what is that?

I want to move around the city and get a feel of Brazil – the people and the culture.

I also want to go around and see the natural beauty around the place.

How many days? I think that the minimal are five days to spend at Manaus. Is a wonderful place with a lot of things to see. Look what you can’t leave:

The National Teather, wonderful place

“Encontro das Águas”, is a nice natural phenomenum where two rivers walk side by side without the mix of the water. You can rent a little boat to see this over the water.

“Bananas Market”, a open market where you can see a lot of regional fruits (some very very strange :)

“Ponta Negra”, is a river beach with a lot of bars to spend some time to eat a wonderful fish.

And, to finish, eat a fish over the Negro river in a restaurant there. Is magical ;)

You can see some pictures of the my first trip to Manaus at:

If you need more infos, send an e-mail to my friend Jansen Sena at jansen@comunidadesol.org. He lives there and can give more infos for you.

Good trip!

Thanks Paulino for your reply.

A couple of other questions :

Is Manaus an expensive place – I am just a student :-)

I don’t know Portuguese – would it be a big problem ?

Brazil don’t have expensive places to foreigners. Manaus is a little bit expensive if you compare with my city but for examples you can eat a fish to 3 people in a good restaurant for US$ 15,00.

Here a “table” of prices in dollars to compare:

Coke can: Between US$ 0,70 to US$ 1,00

City bus ticket: US$ 1,00

“Student eat” (that you can eat in cheap places): US$ 2,50 to US$ 4,00

Big Mac (Shit!): US$ 3,00

Marlboro Cigarretes (box with 20): US$ 1,20

If you have student card, you pay 50% off in all cultural places like museus, cinemas, cultural parties, etc.

About portuguese/english:

You can’t find a person speaking english easily. We’re 180 million people talking portuguse. Try to look university students or youg people. This generation can help you with a “poor” english (like me) but, don’t worry, brazilian people can make anything to help a foreign person here.

Good luck!

Dear Manish,

In my opinion, there are a lot of cities and places in Brazil that are more beautiful than Manaus, like Florianópolis, Natal, Fortaleza, Rio, Bonito, Fernando de Noronha, Ilha Grande… but Manaus is just famous because it´s in the middle of nowhere and because of all these “save the amazon” things.
The weather there is extremely hot, there are no much cultural events such as theatres, shows or art exposition. It´s a touristic place for foreigns. People from Brazil rarely travel to Manaus.
Now the positive things: it´s a safe place. There aren´t many robberies and pickpockets like in Rio de Janeiro.
The old theatre is beautiful. The sunsets viewed from Manaus and from all the forest is amazing. So many colours in the sky.
In the nightlife of Manaus there aren´t many “techno and dance music” clubs, but there are a lot of clubs where people dance 2 typical brazilian music styles: “forró” and “brega”. You should try to see that at least one night. Are u M or F?
Well, I hope this can help u. :)
