Uruguay
How much time do you plan to stay in Uruguay. The most visited and popular places are: Colonia de Sacramento, Montevideo (mercado del puerto, palacio salvo, la rambla, etc), and Punta del Este.
check out this from uruguay site, might help.
good luck,

This is a someday/maybe trip for me. No definite plans yet, just trying to get a better idea of where I might go. Thanks for the links. They look like really pretty places!

I agree with gabo_uy; Colonia is nice as is Punta del Este. Other than Montevideo, these were the only places we visited in Uruguay, so can’t recommend much more.
I do suggest, however, that you also include Argentina and a visit to Buenos Aires, as that is a beautiful and very interesting city very close to Uruguray ;o) We took a ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia, a bus to Montevideo, a bus to and back from Punta del Este and finally a ferry from Montevideo to Buenos Aires.. It all went very well – despite us not speaking any Spanish at all G

Colonia is nice, but not really someplace to spend more than an afternoon/evening in.
Punta del Este is beautiful (reminds me so much of Prince Edward Island where I’m from). Only, of course, it’s Uruaguay. :)
Montevideo is also a great European-ish city. There were certainly things that I didn’t expect (dog poo and old mate on the street everywhere) but aside from that it was a lovely city and the people are very nice.
As for the bussing to Buenos Aires… I would just take the “Buquebus” from Montevideo to Buenos Aires. Faster, and not just a long bus trip.
One suggestion I would make, if you are VERY comfortable driving in Europe or South America is to rent a car. Now, it’s not for driving in the city—but for driving in the country side.
We drove from Montevideo to a (somewhat yucky but interesting) border-town called Chuy/Chui on the Brasil border. You need a visa to go to Brasil, but not at this border place. :)

January is Uruguay’s August, it’s when everybody takes off to punta del este or other spots along the beach. I recommend going in either December or Feburary. Colonia is a nice place for walking along the old coble stone streats. Punta del Este is a big party town, if you like trendy shops, cafes, beaches and clubs, then it’s your kind of place. Further up the coast there are lots of nice smaller beach towns.
Montevideo is nice, make sure you stay in Bario sur, centro, palermo.. don’t just stay near the bus station. Right near the central plaza in ciudad vieja there are nice pedistrian streets and plazas…
