you won’t have a problem with the language. all people generally speak english. yes, it’s very sunny, romantic and absolutely beautiful. it’s not because i am from there, but i love lisbon. i reckon it would be easier to get a direct flight, although spain is a nice country too, with very very beautiful cities such as barcelona :)
have fun. and email me on simplesmentealice@hotmail.com if you need more tips!

thanks! I have been checking and re-checking(I live in Chicago).Seems pretty $$$.I’ve never had much of a desire to go to Spain(I’m more partial to Eastern/Central Europe)but for some reason I just cannot get Portugal out of my mind!Perhaps I just need to wait until tourist season is over..

well, the portuguese airline only goes to new york. what you can do is get a cheaper flight to london and than a low cost from england to lisbon. it’s usually easy to find one! where is the house located, btw?

Oh.. I’m sooo jealous you’re going! Lisbon is one of my favourite places. You’ll have no problem with the language, most everyone speaks English, using the Portugese word for “Thank you” Is helpful though. I used my phrase book once, that was waaaay out in the country. Not sure about the airfare. I live in Seattle and flew Northwest to Amsterdam then KLM to Portugal. I think that was about $700, but that was back in 2000. Have fun!

Hi ravennoir,
It will not be a problem for any English speaking person to go about in Portugal, specially in Lisbon. As a cosmopolitan city on the rise most people are by-lingual, as you so well said it is a brilliant place for bargain hunting, try local markets instead of the big shopping centres.
In regards to the cost of tickets, it depends on the place were you fly from. You can get really cheap prices to the Algarve and then you can get the train into Lisbon it will cost about £20 for the train ticket but still, if you find a cheap ticket it is not a bad deal. Check the web for the best prices including british cariers. There are so many ways to get to Lisbon, you can go to Porto and then catch a train prices are about the same as from Faro the train journey takes about 3 to 4 hours.
Hope the info helps if you need any more just let me know, i’ll be happy to help.
Which ever way you choose to get there i hope you enjoy it, i know i do every time i go there…
Have fun,
