The little dog picture next to my name was taken in Tokyo!
Why does it have to be either Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo Disney Sea? If you can go to BOTH, even on the same day, then do it!
If you can only afford to go to one, I would say without question Tokyo Disney Sea. It is the finest theme park in the world and utterly unique. There isn’t anything like it, whereas there are four other Magic Kingdoms which are very similar to Tokyo Disneyland.

I agree with Horseradish. You should definitely go to Tokyo Disneyland, espcially if you’re from LA area and particularly if you’ve been to Disney World, FL.
Note that if you like shopping the Disney Store at Tokyo Disneyland station is totally unique. Many of its inventory are different from any items you find in other Disney stores.
Have a good time.
Unless you’re staying near Disneyland, make sure you allow yourself enough time to take the train to Disneyland. Especially during monring rush hours.

I’ve been to Tokyo Disneyland about 20 times and enjoyed every visit. If you have never been to any of the other Disney properties before, this should be your first choice. However, if you have been to Disney’s Anaheim, Paris, or Orlando theme parks, you’ll get more out of a visit to Disney Sea. I went there last November and was very impressed. Nothing was repetitive of other properties. It’s a fascinating mix of old themes (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) and new (Finding Nemo), with touches of Indiana Jones and some uniquely Japanese elements. The huge fire and water show before closing each night is spectacular. It will take you a very full day to see either one of the parks, but they are right next to each other, so if you have two days, try to see both. There are special passes that allow unlimited entry to both. Wear good walking shoes. You’ll be on your feet a lot.

Definately Disney Land if you’re single; Disney Sea is very intentionally couple-oriented with close, short, mellow rides. Disney Land is the way to go ;)
