A question about this place:
cash needed or can I get by with credit card? This is while I'm visiting there trying to rent equipments, get on volcano tours, sign up for water sports, etc...

Credit cards can be used for almost everything. We had 10 people in our group so nothing was cheap. We used credit cards for almost everything except very small purchases.

Only a couple of restaurants we went to required cash. All the rentals and tours we used accepted credit cards.

I haven’t come across a place that didn’t take a card yet..but I don’t really use it that often either. I use cash…so I guess I’m not really a help in this matter. I would always suggest having cash on hand for the “just in case” event. But you are probably fine with using your card 98% of the time. ATM’s will work there too if you take a debit card.

Most places take credit cards. We are even civilized enough to have a Walmart, Costco, K-Mart and all that. The comforts of the Mainland.

Make sure you try the local fruits that are in season, mangoes, papayas, lychee or rambutan, etc. Those are cheaper at the Farmer’s market by the library and they mostly take cash.
