Wouldn’t you drive or travel through La Rioja befoe going over to Gijon? I suppose you COULD go along the coast first. Don’t forge Santander, home to the philosopher Jorge Santayana. He is noted for having written “He who ignores history is doomed to repeat his mistakes.”

Don’t forget Covadonga, site of a battle between defending Christians and invading Moors, which is considered the turning point of the Islamic-Christian struggle for the Iberian Peninsula.
