A question about this place:
I still haven’t visited Vaneema Juures (an Estonian restaurant)... Has someone here visited this restaurant? I would be really grateful for price examples, what’s on the menu and recommended dishes! Thanks...

I, on the other hand, DO travel the world for restaurants (or at least for the food).

We were in Tallinn twice in 2003 and visited Vaneama Juures both times – it’s tasty and “authentic” and both times we found other tourists acting amusing.

The menu at the time was: a vegetable main course (it was a casserole thing with cheese and potatoes – I had that once), a bird dish (the whole bird), a rabbit dish, a wild boar dish and a fish dish (the other time, I got this). One of each. We all got something different and I don’t think anyone was disappointed.

The food is (was) cheap and filling – our conversions came to about $15 (US) for appetizers, salads, main course, dessert. That may have even included an alcoholic drink.

It’s been so long I’m that there’s a chance the menu has changed or prices went up but it seemed that in Estonia the food seemed quite reasonable (especially compared to Stockholm, where we were living).

Thank you for your answer!
Even though your visit was some time ago, it gave me an idea about the prices!
After being in Tallinn four times, I’m done asking for “meaningful” things, as someone called it here! I should know about the must-sees and what to avoid by now…
Did you visit Olde Hansa, Eesti Maja and/or Peppersack as well? If yes, what did you think about them?
And what did you think about the city in general? (It’s always fun to see what other people think about Tallinn)!

We didn’t visit Olde Hansa – once for time, and the second trip because we ended up in the middle of a Medieval Fair and it was insanely busy!

We ate lunch at Eesti Maja – the decor was pretty cute but I don’t recall the food.

In a future visit I hope to visit Peppersack but we ran out of time!

I really enjoy Tallinn – we can spend way too much time at the (“Sweet Tooth”? The bakery soon after you enter olde town from the docks), the city is beautiful in summer OR winter (our best photos are from early March) and it feels safe (I’m not that adventuresome when in comes to feeling safe). Just wandering around town, occassionally eating, taking beautiful pictures :-)

Four times? Where are you? (Oslo?) If so – how do you make the trip – from Stockholm we were of course on the ferry which was great.

Yes, I live in Oslo! The first time (2001) I went with bus to Stockholm, then Silja Line to Helsinki and the Superseacat (catamaran) over to Tallinn… The the same trip back after the stay.
Second time (2004) I went with Estonian Air to Tallinn and Superseacat/Silja Line/bus back.
Third time(2005): Estonian Air both ways.
Fourth time(March 2006): Same as third…
Now Norwegian has started flights to Tallinn… This summer we’ll probably fly with Norwegian to Tallinn, and Estonian Air home.
Tallinn is my second home… I can’t imagine going anywhere else again (except maybe combine a stay in Tallinn, with a stay another place in Estonia)! I get all I need in Tallinn: great food, sweets, culture, shopping and relaxing… And of course it’s safe, as you said (so far away from the “terror cities” as you can come)!
Have you been to the cafés Kehrwieder, Tristan ja Isolde and/or Bogapott (last one is also an art studio/shop with great ceramics)?

Sorry, I didn’t hit this restaurant, though there are plenty of great places to dine and the food is cheap.

Thanks, I know… I’ve visited some of them! I’m definetly visiting Vanaema Juures the next time I’m in Tallinn…
Do you have any other suggestions of places to dine, where they serve typical Estonian dishes?
