In the case of English, as it is spelt. Ber (as the “bir” in bird) ner (as the “ner” in nerd) ay (as the “ay” in say).

In Gaelic, it is pronounced bee-yon-der-ray (that’s how I hear it, but I am not a native speaker of the ancient language). The spelling differs slightly between versions of Gaelic, but the most widely used spelling is Bheàrnaraigh.

I’m interested..

It wouldn’t happen to mean Bear(’s)-Island?

(Then perhaps being Nordic in origin.. modern Icelandic spelling would be Bjarnarey)

Might drive me to visit this particular isle during my visit to the western isles.. My first name is Björn :P

Uhm.. no matter I see now that it does indeed mean Björn’s Island

:)
