A question about this place:
Can anyone recommend a cheap hostel/hotel to stay in St Petersburg that's close to the City centre?

Answers:

This depends on a lot of factors, such as the time of year, or if there is a special event going on in the city (as far as price is concerned,) but the Oktyabrskaya Hotel is usually affordable. Nothing fancy, unless you pay extra to stay in the renovated portion of the hotel. If you take the unrenovated wing, you’re probably looking at $75-$85 per night. And believe me, that’s about as cheap as you want to go, and there is nothing fancy about it. Unfortunately all of the nice hotels in St. Pete are extremely expensive.

Anyway, it’s very easy to find. If you’re going down Nevskiy Prospekt towards the train station, the train station will be on the right side, the Oktyabrskaya Hotel will be on the opposite corner to the left. From there, you are within walking distance (or a short taxi ride) from everything.

Hope this helps.

If you really want to go cheap the St. Petersburg International Hostel (www.ryh.ru) is right there, a walking distance from the Ploschad Vosstaniya metro station / Nevsky. It’s basic but clean, and definitely affordable, and the staff is very friendly!

Hm, Chris´ offer seems to me quite expensive. Well, though i´m in Petersburg at this moment, i don´t know any hostel personally, but look for example at
www.ryh.ru
It´s the same direction as Oktyabrskaya, next to the Moskovkii vokzal, in a quite nice street. Prices about 20 $ ...

I’ve also found rather expensive (about 60$) offers:

Here are a lot of hotels about any price:

Unfortunately, Russian only :(

there is a hostel on ulitsa kazanskaya (previously ulitsa plekhanova) about two doors down behind kazanskaya sobor. it is associated with herzen university and to the best of my knowledge you have to have a sponsor… but it is about 10 bucks a night with a single and a bathroom. it is also a foreign language dorm. there is a restuarant on the ground floor…

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions! I will definitely have a look at all these and find out which is the best for me. I think since I’ve never been to Russia and I’m going there for the first time by myself, what’s most important to me is somewhere that is close to the the city centre and is secure. I’d rather pay a bit extra to have that security than some dodgy cheap place.

I’ve got a Russian friend who may be able to translate the Russian hotel websites, so thanks ANZ for the links as well!

Cheers
