Its been years since I have been in Fort Collins. I do miss it, but I would hate to comment on where to live, but I will say this everyone was amazing and I doubt that has changed much.
Good luck with the move.

I think the south east part of town is the nicest. Its also the newer part. But the way north part of town is where the country club is and that’s not too bad. There really isn’t a “bad” part of town. It would be quieter towards the outshirts of town.

You should take a look at a map on Google or Mapquest to get an idea of the busy streets. Keep in mind that Fort Collins is big into being a college town, and you especially get that feel close to the campus areas in the more “northern” areas of the Fort. You will find a ton of houses for rent all the time, and a lot of them are older and not kept well… lawns especially. You will also see a lot of parties in houses and traffic all around the campus. If you don’t want a busy area, don’t live on Shields, Prospect, COLLEGE, and Harmony. On a lesser scale, Drake, Taft Hill, Lemay, and Horsetooth are also fairly busy and, some of them are one lane roads. All of the streets are much busier the closer they get to College and Colorado State University. The further south you go from Harmony the further away you are from everything and you can find more farms and such. Right off on the east side of harmony near I-25 is where all of the new development is.
There are some nice places in coveys and offshoots that are close to campus, though – you just have to know where to look. Your best bet is to just drive around the Fort (it’s not that big) and find a place that feels fairly nice. Keep in mind that you may not want to get too far away from the college simply because there are so many restaurants and even Old Town (bars, more restaurants, novelty shops, city events) is just north of the campus on College. Also, we always joke that if you don’t know where something is, your best bet is to just go down College Avenue. /Everything/ in the town seems like it’s right off of College.
Generally there /is/ no “bad” part of town. There are a lot more places that look run down, but I never have felt unsafe here.

Actually, I was considering Colorado too. I currently live in Chicago and I read that Ft. Collins ranked as the best town to live in, especially for young families. I would love if someone would email me interesting tidbits about the city. If you have left Chicago for Ft. Collins, I ESPECIALLY want to hear from you. Email me at LeoV1234@aol.com
