I agree with shygirl. If you are going to have a good time, go friday night. There’s a great irish pub on river street and plenty of other scenes to party at. If you could go any time in April I’d go at the end of the month so you could go to Forsynth Park for the SCAD sidewalk chalk festival. You’ve never seen anything like it – I compete every year, normally, but this year it conflicts with a time schedule, unfortunately. I would recommend going to SCAD’s play – it’s cheap to buy tickets and always a great show.

A Friday has more in the way of clubs, acts, but in a sense there may be more opportunity for robbers, pickpockets, etc. I still find that there are interesting events, museums open, etc. on Mondays, and the thieves, muggers, etc are wore out on Monday like many others from the weekend, so I like early Sunday mornings and Mondays to go in to town and explore, feeling a bit safer, though I still take the proper and often common sense precautions, such as not to walk to close to streetway entrances and alleyways where would be attackers can hide, keep alert to what’s around me, etc. Now the city has put many more police on the street since the Christmas incident, so that’s good. But in depressed and disfunctional neighbourhood microeconomies, criminals are going to take advantage of inexperienced and others who seem “opportune” for exploitation. So just keep your eyes open, be more cautious after dark in out of the way places, and so forth.
Friday night on St. Pat’s weekend? No you’re not coming until first week of April. Check for specific business and other cultural websites for activities. I wouldn’t just count on a Friday without a specific event in mind, unless you just love urban weekend experiences in general. “The Sentient Bean” and other places have their own websites.

It’s been a while since I was in Savannah, but I’d recommend looking up the schedule of events at scad.edu, and try to make it to a few galleries. Also, be sure to visit Il Pasticcio on Bull & Broughton. Excellent food and wine there.
Most of your time during the day will probably be spent walking around through the squares downtown, and the parks and cemetaries. Of course there are also tour trolleys and carriages, but don’t take them. You won’t see everything, and the way they block traffic annoys the hell out of the locals.
Oh, and the crime isn’t too bad, as long as you don’t go wandering through Forsyth at night. But be careful.
