A question about this place:
My wife and I are staying over in Flagstaff on our way to Greer, AZ for a wedding. How far away is the South Rim? Is it realistic to catch sunset at the Grand Canyon in early July if we leave Flagstaff at 6PM? Thanks, in advance.

it takes about an hour to an hour and a half to get there. Right now the sun is going down at about 6:30 but I would imagine in July it would be much later. I think you would ok if you left at that time.

Let me know if you need any help finding places to visit when you are up there. We have a lot of good restaurants here too.

Thanks. Our plan is to drive from Vegas to Flagstaff on Thursday and race up to the South Rim for Sunset. Then Friday we’re going to go back to the South Rim if we feel like we missed out on something. Otherwise we’ll be making our way to Greer, AZ. The Petrified Forest National Park is on the way so we figured on stopping there.

Ever been there? Would you recommend more time at the Grand Canyon or PFNP?

I just dug into my photo library and a couple sunrise/set calendars to check on this. :)

Sunset will be around 7:45 in July, as it was when I was there in 2003. Whether you’re taking pictures or just enjoying it, it’s absolutely gorgeous that time of year and day.

According to my photos, you start getting some nice colors in the sky around 7:15. The color really starts pouring on around 7:30, and you’ve hit twilight - still with some absolutely fascinating colors in the sky - at about 7:50.

As DarcDarc said, it’s possible to make it from Flag to the South Rim before sunset, but I’d advise leaving even 10 or 15 minutes before 6. Sunset is a very popular time at the Canyon, and you don’t want to miss the sunset because you’re waiting at the gate or trying to find a place to park.
