hm…whenever we went as a family we always rented a condo for a week or so. there is a hilton hotel. that was kind of not a good recommendation on that one.

Well, at the very least I can use my Hilton points.
;-)
I’m looking for a recommendation along the lines of what winniewoo was talking about – unfortunately I’m on my own, but everything she has described sounds like exactly what I need for a quick getaway weekend.

The area right around Kitty Hawk is pretty developed, so the hotel thing is an option. Of course, you’ll miss all the flavor of OBX that way. If you go further north to Duck, or South to Rodanthe, you get into the great, quiet beach house areas. Of course, on your own that might be too expensive. I don’t think the houses are meant for singles getaways.
Something you could look into is the town of Manteo. It’s the little island right before you get onto the Outer Banks strip. It is a gorgeous little town with a nice waterfront area. And it would be closer to the Wright Bros. Memorial than if you were down in beach house territory.

I agree! Manteo is a beautiful little town! An outstanding place to hang for a coupla days!

How about a Bed & Breakfast?
The Duck Inn – It’s in Duck; about 20 minutes (probably a little less) from the WM. http://www.theduckinnbnb.com/
Cypress Moon Inn – Kitty Hawk; maybe 15 minutes from the WM. http://www.cypressmooninn.com
Hotels I would recommended:
Days Inn Wilbur and Orville Wright – Kill Devil Hills. I’ve stayed here for a romantic get-a-way, even though I lived 10 minutes down the road! I know the owners, and they are stellar people. Very comfortable accomodations; about 5 minutes from the WM.

Holiday Inn Express in Kitty Hawk – About 5 miles from the WM. www.hiexpress.com/kittyhawknc
Hope this helps! Have a wonderful time… I was “back home” at the Outer Banks to spend Christmas with my family. (They live in Manteo.) If this is your first time, you will really enjoy it and want to come back when you can stay longer… but take it from a former “local” ... SUMMER is not the best time. wink

Definitely head south – either to Avon or Buxton.
You’ll pass through miles of unspoiled island and get to the quieter, more interesting part of the island.
And if you want more of a nightlife and party atmosphere, head on down and take the ferry to Ocracoke.
Wherever you go, make reservations first!

Mark,
These are all great suggestions. In Raleigh, However, you MUST check out the Angus Barn! Its near the airport and is most incredible. If you go, do me a favor and visit my new website http://www.chowbelly.com and share your thoughts.

We own a timeshare in Duck NC so I don’t know anything about the hotels around the area. However, I believe the units rent out for the nights … try contacting Barrier Island Station in Kitty Hawk for more information. Have a wonderful stay!

I would suggest the Days Inn, as well. I’m from that area, but haven’t been back in awhile. Although there are 1 or 2 small hotels in Currituck County you might consider. If they’re still open. One is in Point Pleasant and the other is in Harbinger (I think). Can’t remember the names off-hand, but they’re on the main road. Can’t miss ‘em.

Does anyone have any experience staying with Sun Realty? They seem to have a lot of options and there is some good info on their site. Just wondering, thanks!
