I do have some family in San Antonio. They enjoy the area a lot. As far as cleanliness, the areas that I saw were clean and nice, tourist friendly and a lot of things to see and do. I think Houston has the dirty reputation in Texas.

Hey Kate.
I have never heard anyone say that Texas was dirty and it doesn’t seem to me, but then, I moved here from Baltimore, Maryland, and that was pretty dirty.
San Antonio is great, I absolutely love it. The only problem is the allergens, but that is the case for most of Texas.
There is a company called “Our Kids” that puts out a monthly magazine for activities and yearly the put out a “phone book” that has all kinds of helpful numbers for parents. Their website is http://sanantonio.parenthood.com/
Hope this helps, and have a great day.

I am almost offended!!! Just kidding…actually, Houston is kind of dirty but the rest of Texas is pretty clean.
As far as S.A. goes, it’s a beautiful city with a lot of history in it. It’s your typical big city in a lot of ways…crime, gangs, the usual big city stuff. It’s not your typical city in a lot of ways…no skyscrapers, a valued history and lots of renovation that recycles and reinvigorates the downtown and surrounding area.
We’re pretty diverse but have a large Hispanic population. We’re also pretty spread out so you don’t see alot of people crammed into certain spots of the city. The urban neighborhoods are good and alot of them are being reinvented all the time. The suburban areas are nice. School districts vary so do your homework before you move.
The surrounding areas are beautiful and make great weekend getaways. 1 hour from Austin, 2½ hours from the beach, 3 hours from Houston and about 4 hours from Dallas/Ft. Worth.
As far as Texas goes, we have ocean (the Gulf), desert, mountains, prairies and piney woods all in one state. I love it here. Born and raised and ain’t leaving yet!

San Antonio
Absolutely! In fact, I think it’s THE most family-friendly city. There are kids absolutely everywhere. We lived in Austin for a number of years, and it’s an incredibly hip city. We moved to San Antonio for my job, and the first thing we noticed was the children everywhere. There is a children’s museum. The library is very kid-friendly. What else - there are festivals all the time, and there are always kid-related stuff to do at them. As far as Texas being dirty, compared to what? Austin is definitely cleaner than San Antonio - the areas you see have more wealth per capita than S.A. But S.A. isn’t particularly dirty. I guess it all depends on where you live. As far as safety goes, i’ve only felt unsafe in a couple of places around town, and really, i didn’t have much reason to, i was just unfamiliar to the area. Ask again if you have any more questions.

I was only in San Antonio for 2 days but I enjoyed my time there. I was near the riverwalk and didn’t get a chance to see much else of the city. What I saw though, I loved. I visited a couple different cities/towns during my 1 month stay at my sister’s house and I think I liked San Antonio the most. As for it being family-friendly….I don’t know. I’d check out the schools and spend some time there on a short vacation to see what you think. My sister and I were there with her 2 kids and they enjoyed it as well. We walked around day and night and I didn’t feel too scared, other then the typical not knowing the place well uneasiness. My sister went back today actually with the two kids and they’re having a great time at the Alamo. In the end, it really depends on you.

only dirty in the sense of that wonderful decay that goes with historical cities (a la new orleans pre-katrina).
that little bubble of san antonio/austin is such a great area to live. i wasn’t prepared for just how progressive it was going to be when i first moved there. not having kids myself i don’t really know much about the school system or any of that, but i would recommend it to anyone who wanted to build a life there!

My former roommate grew up in San Antonion, and my step-mother-in-law was raised there. They loved it, and I like it a lot too although I don’t live there. I live in Texas and I haven’t found it to be any “dirtier” than anywhere else. San Antonio is a city, though, so be appropriately cautious of that. Don’t let it turn you off, though, the city itself has a LOT of history (it is very old, and that adds some to the sense of decay especialy in contrast to newer areas like the Riverwalk).

I was surprised to hear that Texas is considered ‘dirty.’ Honestly, I had driven all over Texas, including my most recent trip which covered the pan handle. I didn’t see anything that was memorable as being ‘dirty’ and felt SanAn area was VERY nice. I barely toured Houston, so I don’t think I could speak towards it. Considering that the more you cram into an area, the more cleanliness becomes an issue, I should think any metro area would be judged by the person going there. I live in Philadelphia – which is filthy. It’s been called Filthydelphia by locals for years. Compared to Philly, SanAn was a pleasure! Go visit and see for yourself. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

San Antonio is a big city with a small town feel. I was raised here. i am now 21 and go to school elsewhere, but I definatly enjoy coming home a lot. This is such a family town! The people here are very friendly. They will just talk to you in the groccery store or when you are pumping gas. I noticed how unique san antonio was when I left and started traveling. People aren’t as open in other places. It may have a lot to do with the high Latino population. Latinos tend to be very warm people. It isn’t diry. The highways and buildings are very clean. I don’t know who told you Texas was dirty, but it isn’t.

I’ve lived in almost every major city in Texas and SA is a great place to raise a family. Although I love Houston, SA is laid back, not to big, diverse, great music and lots of things to do…

San Antonio is one of the cleanest cities I have ever visited. Also, it just so happens that Texas’ state motto is “Friendship”. We are indeed quite friendly, and certainly what you’d call ‘Family-Friendly’. I grew up here in San Antonio, and wouldn’t trade my childhood here for anything in the world! Hope that helps!

San Antonio has a diversified economy with four primary focuses: financial services, health care, national defense, and tourism. San Antonio is home to five Fortune 500 companies. The median income for a household in the city is $36,214, and the median income for a family is $53,100. The population density is 2,808.5 people per square mile. This unique city offers some of the best cultural institutions, events, restaurants and nightlife in South Texas that both natives and visitors enjoy. So seeing these dats, you can judge yourself that it is a family friendly city to raise a family. I have never heard anyone saying that Texas is dirty and to me also it doesn’t seem so.
