A question about this place:
Leaving for Maui in 2 weeks, what's the best luau to go to? Staying in Wailea, but will have a car. Also, I'm an architect and would love to see some neat buildings, any recommendations?

I suggest Maui Revealed to guide your trip. I’ve been to Maui 20 times or so over the years and the latest edition of this book always has the latest and most concise info. Best luau—trust this book (I don’t have it near me otherwise I’d look it up).

For architecture I’d really suggest the drive to Hana making sure that you stop off in every small town you can. Take every side road and you’ll see some amazing little missionary churches. Have a great trip!

I went to what I believe was called the Royal Lahaina Luau. I thought it was really fun, the show was great and the food was fantastic. As far as it being the best, I don’t know. I would aslo suggest purchasing Maui Revealed. I hope you have a wonderful trip!

As for the luau … i can’t help. i’ve been to maui several times but have never gone.

From an architectural stand point … Lahaina is a classicly designed town (previously the royal capital of the hawaiian islands) with wonderful architecture. be sure to see the banyan tree in the town square … AMAZING!!!

Certainly you must go to Paia, an old hippie town where the wind surfing is world renown … while there be sure to go to mamma’s fish house – order anything and you’ll be more than happy.

Halliemallie is a wonderful place to visit while you’re on thed eastern part of the island … be sure to have lunch at the general store there – simply wonderful!

And you must go to the top of Haleakala … not much from an architectural standpoint … but i’ve never seen a better view!!

Last but not least, Hana is not to be missed …. the drive alone is worth the trip!!

Lahina on the beach is nice or one of the hotels in your area like the Outrigger which I think is a Renasaunce Hotel now. Make sure you rent a car a do the Hana Road tour, they sell these little tapes that give you a guided tour, god it is beutiful.

Makawao is an old cattle town now filled with art. Check out Hot Island Glass.

I liked the Old Lahina Luau. It’s got really good food and nice atmosphere. The only problem is that there is no explanation about which dance means what… but the luau itself is in a really nice place right by the ocean.

As for architecture, well, there’s more plants than buildings, of course. I’ve only been to Maui and don’t remember being amazed by any buildings…. sorry. A good guide book may be of more help…

I hope you have a great time!!

I would definitely check out the Old Lahaina Luau. We saw a few others around our hotel, and none of them compared to this one. The food was as great as the entertainment. Try the poi, just to say that you have.

Old Lahaina Luau for sure! Architecture? hmmmm….. The best architecture I saw was the bar at the Rusty Harpoon! Mama’s Fish House by Pa’ia is great, part of the building is a Banyan tree! You can spend the night in a treehouse on the road to Hana, as well. Maui Revealed is definitely the book of choice.
