I loved the area and had a great weekend there. I would suggest going to the library and picking up a Fodor’s guide to Colorado and/or CO Springs.
Don’t expect to make the drive this time of year (winter/spring) and probably not until after Memorial day. If that’s when you’re going then don’t expect to go to fast and you’ll have to stop to pay tolls anyway. If it’s a nice day it’ll be crowded, too. For road info call (719) 684-9383

It’s about a 20 mile drive up Pike’s Peak, and about half of the distance is unpaved. I’ve been up it several times and suggest driving if you want to spend any real time at the summit. I wouldn’t expect you’d want to drive up it very quickly. Take your time. It’s really an experience, and heed the website’s advice.
I really enjoyed living near Old Colorado City when I lived in the Springs. Manitou Springs was always a little much for me.
Other things worth checking out in the area: Garden of the Gods—especially if you bring your bike. Downtown has some decent brewpubs (or did several years ago). Florrisant Fossil Beds, which is about 20 miles west of the Springs is kind of interesting if you’re into fossil tree stumps. I suggest anyone going there check that out.
Have fun. It’s a great place.
