I was there for a year in 2001. I knew no metal heads. I’ll ask my husband. He was born and raised in Sweden.

Metal is quite popular in Sweden, with Stockholm and Gothenburg having strong local metal scenes.

Well, depends on what you compare with, but metal and indie are big anyway. And house, but check out places like Kelly’s if you like metal: http://kellys.lunchinfo.com

I flew into Nyköping and had to get a bus into the centre of town. The bus’s sound system was playing Whitesnake/Bon Jovi/Europe or something like that the whole way.
Make your own conclusions!
In Finland on the bus from Pirkkala Airport to Tampere, it was Flashdance.

I’ve grewn up in Sweden, and I’m not sure what you mean with “as it appears” but I’d say it’s quite popular. It’s hard to have a conversation about music in a group where nobody likes Metallica or Iron Maiden – there’s always someone who does.
Even though I prefer silly girly music like Savage Garden and Backstreet Boys, I have to admit I have plenty of favourite songs by both Metallica and Iron Maiden. Everyone here does :D

I would say yes, but I think this is a more general Scandinavian trend. (Think Rattus from Finland or Dimmu Borgir from Norway.) To be honest I only passed through Goteborg, Lund, Malmo and Stockholm, but there were obvious fans. I went to some local shows in Denmark, which were great.
I think unabashed love of metal makes Scandinavia cool.

I have only been here a year, but I would say it is incredibly popular. It seems to me that the people I know are fixated on older groups, mostly from the 70s and 80s, but we are all in our 30s and 40s so perhaps that has something to do with it. Among the favorites of my friends are Europe, Sweet, Judas Priest and Thin Lizzie.
