A question about this place:
If you could only choose one winery, and one restaurant, which would you recommend? and why? Thanks!

Definitely eat lunch and taste at V. Sattui
http://www.vsattui.com/
You can picnic on the grounds and they do free tastings (as much as you like.) It’s laid back and FUN and the food and wine are excellent.

I think the best tour we went on wine-production-wise was at Ferrari Carano, which is actually in Sonoma County
http://www.ferrari-carano.com/
They are a little less well known, but have FABULOUS wine and the tour we took (off season, in March) was just us.

If you are interested in a sit-down dinner place, let me know. My husband will remember names better than I (he’s a Sonoma County native, so he always chooses where we eat in Napa and Sonoma!)

V. Sattui was my suggestion as well. It’s by far my #1 stop in Napa Valley. And you must leave, if nothing else, with a bottle of the Gamay Rouge. It’s remarkable.

Hi Wynk,

If V. Sattui is your number #1 choice, you’ve convinced me that it will definately be on the itinerary. And, anything that’s deemed “remarkable” – great word – is certainly worth a try!

Let me know if I can help you with suggestions in Vancouver and Victoria… both worth the visit!

Your Millenium Restaurant recommendation is also exactly what we’re looking for.

Thanks, and Cheers

Awesome. Millennium is expensive but to me it is worth every penny! I recommend doing the chef’s tasting menu with wine pairings.

Hi Wynk

We’ll be in California the first two weeks in April. On return, I’ll let you know what we thought of the Millenium “experience”.

During the meal, you can be sure we’ll give you a big toast for the recommendation.

Cheers

Hi Kris10s

Thanks for the great suggestions. They’re now on our list.

We really enjoy picnics when traveling, but will probably include a few sit down dining experiences too, so if your husband has any recommendations, they’d be much appreciated!

I noticed that Vancouver is on your list. I’ve been several times to this fabulous city and surrounding areas … Whistler, Vancouver Island (Victoria, Long Beach, Tofino), Sunshine Coast. Let me know if I can help you with some suggestions and inspirations …

yes on V. Sattui. I have also had a good experience with Folie a Deux winery, they are (goes to check answer) in St. Helena, and the wines are pretty nice plus the grounds and the drive out are very pleasant.

Restaurant, I’m not sure of. Lived in Vallejo for a year but not huge numbers of amazing restaurants thereabouts.

Hi labellizzy,

Three recommendations for V. Sattui! This MUST be a good spot.

We’ll also check out Folie a Deux.

Time to start plotting all these good suggestions on a map.

Merci!

This is a tough choice… I saw another entry you wrote mentioning Sonoma County too… Both valleys have amazing wines, however they are two different experiences. The Napa Valley consists of one valley and the wineries are concentrated and is easier to navigate. Sonoma County wineries are spread out and is divided into many different appellations and regions, and geographically are different. It would be very difficult to choose “one”. That would be difficult, are you going to experience a winery, and the ambience, or are you a connoisseur of wines? If you have a prefered wine that you drink, you may want to visit a winery known for cabs, The Russian River Valley is known for Pinots… For a dining experience, Charlie Palmers Dry Creek Kitchen in the hamlet of Healdburg… or the French Laundry in the Napa Valley. Sonoma County Winery Association has guide books that could help you… As well as Napa Valley. After you get some names of wineries check them out on line too as well as some of the restaurants, you can check out menues! I know I did not answer your question, I would just need more info to help. Enjoy your trip…

Hi Desertmoonwoman40

Neither my wife or I are wine connoisseurs, but we certainly enjoy discovering new ones. We live near the Niagara region in Southern Ontario, and find it hard to drive past a “winery this way” sign whenever we travel anywhere – that’s how we found the Temecula Valley a few years ago.

Our idea is to explore this famous region armed with nothing but a list of recommendations from fellow 43placers, a map and an open mind.

Thanks for your fine suggestions!

Cheers!

Domaine Chandon for sparkling wines;

Don G’s for fried olives and almonds.

Hi GroverNeuse,

A sparkling wine! We’ll start one of our days here …

Now fried olives and almonds is something my wife and I have never tried before (although we have had almond stuffed olives in a martini). Looking forward to it.

Cheers

If you let me know when you go, I might be able to get you some special treatment at Domaine Chandon.

That’s really nice of you!

We expect to be in the Napa Valley area April 8 to 12th, but haven’t made any firm commitments yet, so are quite open to adventure.

Thanks!

For food: The French Laundry. It’s often picked as best restaurant in the country, and that’s well deserved. You usually have to make reservations 6 months in advance so this would only work if you can plan far ahead.

Much easier is the Culinary Institute at Greystone. Amazing setting in a huge stone building, the food is some of the best I’ve ever had and the the staff is wonderful. You should call ahead at least a few weeks in advance for this one.

Hey gtowey,

Sadly, we’re going to be in the area in a few weeks, so The French Laundry seems best left for the next visit. But I’ll try making reservations at the Culinary Institute at Greystone.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Try Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, 5766 Silverado Trail, in Napa. We went over the holidays and it was amazing. Definitely opt for the $30 “Estate Tasting,” it’s actually a great value; the wines we tried were truly wonderful. Have fun!

Hi Marielle,

Good suggestion, thank you. We’ll try it!

And I guarantee we’ll have fun. (We are SO ready for this trip).

I was in Yountville earlier this week and ate at Redd and I certainly did not regret it. The food and service were excellent. They were able to whip up some modified tasting menus for us (my wife is vegetarian while I also eat seafood); not all places are able to do this. They had five and nine course options (I had the five with paired wines). I almost wish I had not spent the day drinking wine and stuffing myself in general so as to have room for the nine course option.

I also ate at the restaurant at Auberge du Soleil. It was excellent as well, both food and service, but it was a different kind of experience (more formal, for one). They were not able to modify their normal tasting menu, but were able to whip up some other things for my wife.

I would have liked to try the French Laundry, but reservations are hard to come by. I believe you can try going there right before 11am to see if there are cancellations if you really want to go.

I know what you mean. When we’re touring through wine regions, my wife and I also spend the day tasting and sampling and then don’t have enough room for a big meal, much less a nine course dinner option.

Thanks for the heads up. We’ll work on our moderation … well, we’ll try at least when we have reservations for dinner.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Cheers

Frank
