Sallye9,

It is possible to ride an elephant there. There is also an elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka. I don’t know a lot about it, but a client goes there to volunteer his time. If you go, you must see what is called the the 8th wonder of the world: Sigiriya.

I hope you make it there.

You absolutely CAN ride an elephant. Go to Kegalle (about a two hour bus ride (30 to 150 rupees, depending on the quality of the bus) from Colombo. Take the Colombo to Kandy bus.). Ask a Tuk-Tuk driver at the bus station in Kegalle to take you to the Elephant Bath (about Rps 250). It’s also called the Millennium Elephant Foundation. Elephant rides are available most days for a small fee. (Ask to ride Rani ) Remember to tip the mahout (the elephant’s handler). It’s the only way they can earn money. The whole trip from Colombo and back should cost you less than USD $20 or 17 Euros.
