If state, there are two attractions that are major national attractions in upstate NY.

The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Though it may help to have a bit of interest in baseball, even if your interest is only to learn about this bit of American culture.

Niagara Falls is the other. You may want to bring your passport here, as there is plenty to do on the other side of the border, which is easily crossed on foot.

There are other fine places worth checking (Adirondacks, Erie Canal path, the Hamptons), but Niagara Falls and the Hall of Fame stand out as truly special for me.

If city, I couldn’t tell you much.

On the more random side of things: best pizza – artichoke pizzeria; best non-shady Ukranian food – Gletchik’s; Best underground boardgame/jazz club – Fat Cat. It’s the weird places you just happen to fall into that make the trip memorable. Enjoy!
