The ancient city is not a bad idea but may be a bit lonesome for a solo traveler on a weekday. Why not head out of the city to historic Kanchanaburi/ Ayutthaya and see the real stuff? (fyi: the Ancient City, Muang Boran, is a scaled-down exhibit of all the landmarks in the entire Thai country)

you could go to pattaya huahin ko samet ko chang these places are not affected n u would probably get great bargains there due to low tourism in the kingdom.

You should be OK as long as you avoid the problem area. Near the airport is the Sunday Market on Friday afternoon, Sat, Sun. I would recommend taking a tour to go out of town to Rayong, Koh Samet for beaches (Pattaya’s dirty). Kanchanaburi has jungles, River Kwai Bridge, WWII history stuff but a stay on a ‘jungle raft’ on the river is nice and quiet and HIGHLY recommended if you have 3 days as there’s elephants, caves, etc. Ayutthaya is a good 2 trip outside BBK and you can go by bus/train/riverboat.
For beaches, do Rayong & Koh Samet.
For history, do Kanchanaburi/Ayutthaya s suggested above.
For in-city do Sunday Market (Chatruchak).

The Chatuchak ‘weekend market’ runs during the week as well and isn’t too far from the airport. Great for walking around and getting bargains that you wouldn’t get in Bangkok. My wife picked up sneakers in a size that we couldn’t find in the city.
