We didn’t find any hotels to be “reasonably” priced, but we did find one that was at least wonderful for the price (not something that’s guaranteed). We thought that the Hyatt was the nicest hotel we stayed at in Japan.

The service was exceptional, the hotel and room was spotless, the room was huge and the bathroom just amazing. They even wrapped our mattress in a blanket to try and make it softer for us (beds in Japan are FIRM!). You can also borrow bikes and ride around Kyoto; lots of fun!

I don’t recall what we paid though I do know we went through Expedia and got a deal. Looks like you can get your 4th night free through the Hyatt site.

If the rooms here are more than you are looking to spend, I’d highly recommend researching B&B type guesthouses. I think you are likely to find them more pleasant and clean than many of the hotels.

Good luck and have fun!

I stayed at the Palace Side (http://www.palacesidehotel.co.jp/english_site/). Next to the Imperial Palace, close to the subway. Clean, friendly, and laundry machines available. Rates are very reasonable, cheaper than what I payed in Paris :)

I stayed in Ryokan Hiraiwa. Nothing fancy, but I appreciated it as a nice Japanese alternative to the normal hotel stay.
