A question about this place:
I want a V.I vacation next year. What should I know? Best island to stay, to visit, time of the year? I've never been to the Caribbean. Side note: I hate tourist traps. Heap on the info. I will be tracking responses for the next few months. KTHXBAI!

-I recommend St John – it’s pretty convenient to the other islands if you decide you want to visit those.

-Most Caribbean places are going to be a bit touristy – that’s their economy – but St John is definitely a little more chill than it’s better-known counter-part St Thomas. The other islands are Water Island (which I believe is all national park so I don’t think you can stay there) and St Croix (which is a bit away from the other islands and other than the Cruzan Rum Factory Tour I’m not sure what their is to do there).

-St John has a lot of options for accommodations – you can do the regular hotel or try some of the camp grounds (Cinnamon Bay has a good one) or renting a house. I think you might enjoy the latter options better. They have a main port with lots of cute restaurants and shops (although it’s touristy) but they also have options to explore other parts of the island that are less busy (I think 80% or so of the island is national park) and still have good beaches, restaurants, nature walks, etc.

-St John is also pretty close to some of the British Virgin Islands with regular ferries so you could spend some days exploring those as well.

I lived on St. Thomas the summer after I graduated from college. and it was an adventure, but I would recommend you don’t stay there. . Definitely go to St John. Cinnamon Bay is fabulous. Rent a car (or find friends with one) to get around the island.

Consider the BVIs. If you can get on a boat, go to Jost Van Dyke, precious. I also enjoyed Tortola, you can take a ferry there. Much less developed and rugged than the USVIs.

Have fun!
