I had one encounter with a pickpocket, in the chaos of trying to enter the zoo at the same time as a school class was. I kept my spare tissue in my back pocket, which is all they got. Keep your valuables in your clothing and you’ll be fine. I even spent a fair amount of time in the big market which is supposedly dangerous, but kept a “don’t mess with me” look on my face the entire time which I think helps.
Thanks so much. Yes, I’ve read about keeping tissue or a phony wallet handy for them.
How long were you there? Was your overall experience good?
Yes, I am a big believer of keeping a fake wallet in my pocket with just a little cash. I also travel with pants that contain velcro pockets or cargo pockets: the guy in this case went for the wrong pocket, assuming it was in the rear one. In my fake wallet I keep some expired credit cards and a little bit of cash to make it look realistic. I also put some highly offensive pornography pictures in there, as revenge in case someone does take my wallet :)
But I digress. I was in Ethiopia for about 2 weeks and definitely had a good time on the whole. It was at the time the most sore-thumb of a visitor I’d been. Ethiopians make a really big deal about Caucasians being in the vicinity, so it was my opportunity to see what a superstar like Britney Spears must feel like when she tries to walk down the street. Take it in stride and do your best to ignore it when you’re not in the mood for it.
I’ve been told that I look Ethiopian so hopefully that will help…as long as I keep my mouth shut ;-)
I’ve been told I look Greek,French, Spanish, Portuguese, Israeli, Arab, northern Indian and more in each of those countries, yet I always take a fake wallet.
Don’t know about the map, but I’m sure you can find something locally. I didn’t have any pickpocket encounters but not much to be stolen on me. Spent about 5 days in Addis. There are some great fruitshakes and very good italian and indian food. People are generally very friendly. Never felt threatened. e*
Thanks so much!
