Of course. It’ll only take you 20 minutes to get into the city center from Schiphol train station.
If you have time after your spliff, please also check out the rest of the city.

Oh, absolutely!
I’m definitely going for a nice stroll around town, currently planning my day there – I will probably hit Rijksmuseum first, and go get high later. Or maybe get high – go to museum – and get high again, lol. Not sure. Would you recommend any interesting sites in a walking distance from Central Station?

8 hours is more than enough time. There is a train service directly from the airport to Amsterdam Centraal. From there you can take tram #1 to Leidseplein which is pretty much the center of everything. There are quite a few good coffee shops near there. I recommend “Rookies” which is on Korte Leidsedwarsstraat. Have fun!

Thanks a lot.
I really hope I won’t get lost! And you are not the first person mentioning “Rookies”, so maybe I’ll see you there for a spliff :)

Don’t be tempted to get anything “to go,” as flights from Amsterdam seem to get extra-special screening upon arrival at other European airports. Also, make sure you visit one of the city’s many Indonesian restaurants for “rjistaffel,” which is a meal made up of many small courses and served with bowls of rice. It’s spicy and a little expensive, but one of the best meals you’ll eat anywhere in the world.

Thank you :)
As tempting as it is I do realize smuggling herb through the customs is not a good idea. Pity…
That food sound very interesting too, definitely worth a try – thanks for your help.
Peace :)

8 hours is more than enough, but don’t even think about visiting the Rijksmuseum or having a “rijstaffel”. The Rijksmuseum is great but will take you too much time, and the “rijstaffel” may be fun to eat, but it’s rather overpriced and not worth the money.
I’d simply take a walk around the city center, maybe have a cup of coffee or a quick lunch at Cafe de Jaren (very nice cafe, very good food at reasonable prices) and have a doobie at my favorite coffee shop “Abraxas” bevor heading back to the airport.
Have fun!

why hello, mr. negativo….
The Rijksmuseum is currently under reconstruction, which is an advantage for the quick visitor: they put all the masterpieces in one wing of the building. You’ll be through in about 1,5-2 hours even if you read most of the signs. The queue may take a little longer at times, but you could consider prebooking your tickets online or buy them at one of the many resellers (try canal cruise companies or one of the tour operators on damrak – the price should be 11 euros without special discounts).
Rijsttafel comes in many different price classes, and just because coldturkey didn’t like it, doesn’t mean that others can’t. I’ve taken many visitors to have one, and got nothing but appreciation. However, if you’re on your own it may be difficult to get one, cause usually they go from 2 persons up. Enough other good options a la carte though. Cafe de Jaren is decent (I used to work there) but I would definitely prefer Indonesian. Try Sampurna on the flower market, or Kantjil & de Tijger near Spui.
My favourite coffeeshop at 5 minutes walk from central station is Siberie. It’s on Brouwersgracht, which also happens to be one of the prettiest canals of Amsterdam, full of nice old warehouses. It’s a small, not so touristy coffeeshop with good quality weed and a nice choice of drinks.
Leidseplein is close to the museums and definitely one of the liveliest areas of town, mind the tourist traps around there though… Rookies is good, but you may also want to consider ‘de Rokerij’ – not cheap but good quality stuff, very atmospheric and usually great music.

Thank you so much!
That helped a lot.
I’ve also spent some time online looking at the maps and attractions, so I won’t feel completely lost (hopefully). Let me know if you care to join me for a spliff in Siberie :)
((((hugs))))

Personally I find it very annoying that the first thing people think about when in Amsterdam is getting high.
I really can’t imagine how you’d want to waste time being stoned when you’re traveling, especially when you have only a short opportunity to quickly get an impression of a very nice city that has many more things to offer than drugs.
The obsession with drugs among tourists visiting Amsterdam is really pathetic, if you ask me.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, this is neither the first, nor the only thing I’ve planned for my short visit there – and it’s not a drug obsession; it’s just nice to smoke a spliff without looking around your shoulder for once…
Thanks for your response,
Love&Peace :)
