That’s a pretty vague question. What do you want to know? I’m an American and I’ve lived in Wellington for over 7 years. I have a friend who is a psychologist here…. what kind of info are you looking for?

Well, New Zealand in general is a very scenic, compact, and laid-back place to live. It seems to be a pretty popular place for people to move to… it is quite isolate though. If you are used to being able to get on a plane and fly to another country in 20 minutes for a few dollars, forget it.

Most of the scenery is in the South Island, most of the people are in the North Island – which is a bit of a bugger, but it does mean the pretty stuff isn’t spoiled by crowds.

Wellington isn’t quite such a great place to visit, but it’s quite nice to live here. If you like the arts, cafes, restaurants and nightlife, there’s plenty going on here and you can walk to all of it because the city center is so compact. If you like outdoors stuff, there’s a lot of very pretty tramping (hiking) around and plenty of mountain biking, but you will need your own transport to get to it all. If you run out of things to do around Wellington you can jump on the ferry and go to the South Island.

Wellington is nothing like Auckland – just in case you were wondering. It’s a lot smaller, a lot easier to get around and the rest of the country doesn’t hate us. Wellington is also the centre of government and the capital, so the sort of work available is often either in government or in support of it. Not sure about psychology though.

If you haven’t already, you should check on your ability to practice here – we have some quite stringent tests and criteria in the Medical industry to immigrants, hence we have people with PhD’s driving taxis because they can’t get work because of Language difficulties or because their qualifications aren’t automatically recognised here.

It rarely snows here, but it does get cold and wet in the winter, but then again, it’s one of the sunniest places in New Zealand in the summer… but the wind is always blowing, no matter what time of year it is. It’s called Windy Wellington for a good reason.

I hope you like it.

Hi,
Elisabetsy and Pretorian:

Thanks for your answers! It’s really good to hear anything about Wellington. Sure, my question was vague ‘cause I was “fishing” for any communication!
Sorry for the general answer but when I tried to answer properly it gave error all the time…
I’ve seen it gets really cold in the winter… really!
Elisabetsy is there any chance you can get me in contact with you psychologist friend?
This could be really helpfull.
Thanks anyone who takes the time to answer me!
