A question about this place:
Any news on the recent Roatan tsunami? Are any of the hotels/resorts damaged? Any information about the Mayan Princess resort? Also, were there any insect problems? We've read some things about it, but have not found many good resources online.

First of all, it was an earthquake, not a tsunami. Secondly, a tsunami warning was put out but then canceled after about an hour of no unusual wave activity.
The hotel/dive shop that I always dive with in West End has reported no structural damage in most part of Roatan as far as she knew. Most damages were done when things fell off tables, shelves, etc.
As for the bugs, yes. There are a lot of sand fleas as well as mosquitoes. I always get bitten despite whatever repellents I wear. It’s uncomfortable but there’s not much you can do about it. I love Roatan so it’s totally worth the bites to enjoy the beach and diving. Apparently much of the sand flea problem is due to not raking the sand, etc. so perhaps bigger resorts (I travel very much as a bachpacker) take better care of their beaches and this will not be as much of a problem.
Hope this helps!
