Just stay off Pigalle’s night clubs, they rip you off. I don’t know about disco clubs, but if you’re into movies there’s plenty of theatres…in the Latin Quarter many are of the “cinema d’ essai” kind with old movies and classics.

What part of town are you staying in ? And what sort of things would you like to do in the evenings – pubs, clubs…?
(And I would try to avoid Pigalle even during the daytime).

I haven’t booked anything yet, but I got a recommendation from someone on a hotel in Montmartre. But I don’t mind taking the metro in the evenings either (as long as I can get back to the hotel too :) ).
I’d rather not go to clubs & pubs alone, my French is good enough to get by but I’m not confident (nor fluent) enough to have entire conversations.

My French is also good enough to get by, and that has always been good enough for me :) Once things gets so far into a conversation, the people I’ve been talking to have always pretty much switched over to English. (I’m guessing you’re Flemmish ? How do you feel about speaking English ? It seems, from your posts, you’re at a really good level). Plus, with the Irish / Scottish / Canadian pubs, a lot of the clientele (and most of the barstaff) would be anglophone…which makes it easier (for me, at least) to strike up a conversation…I’ve heard of Coolin’s alright, I think it’s maybe the same one Alizee is talking about ? I’ve never been to it though – there are others I know better, in different parts of town, if you’re interested ?
I’ve always travelled solo to Paris, and I’ve never had any trouble going to the pub or dining solo. (For eating, The Great Canadian is my current favourite). Having said that, pretty much any cafe in the city will serve you up a great dinner….though the cafes right beside the ‘big’ tourist spots will be more expensive.
In Montmartre…Place du Tertre is surrounded by cafes, it looks pretty but they’d all be really expensive, I’m sure…there’s also Les Deux Moulins, where Amelie Poulain worked, on Rue Lepic. (It’s about 15 seconds away from the Moulin Rouge). If you’re going to be in town for Bastille Day, I’ve heard the steps of Sacre Coeur are a great spot when the fireworks go off ?

Good guess, I am Flemmish :) English is not really a problem (I work for the European HQ of a multinational and with all the different nationalities in the company it’s corporate policy to have email traffic and meetings in English, so…) but I can go to Irish pubs here too, I was looking for more ‘only in Paris’ things to do. However I haven’t been to a Canadian pub yet, I might check that one out (never had Canadian food or beer either).
I’ll probably go around the 21st of July (Belgian holiday), too late for Bastille day I’m afraid.

Hmmm…ok…
You could try this place ? I’m hoping to try it out myself when I go over next…there’s a branch in Strasbourg too and the beer looks interesting.
Oh, there’s a couple of Breton bars and cafes round the Gare Montparnasse, would you be interested in those ?

Not as well as I would like, I still get terribly lost without a map. Good friends of mine live in Brussels, they’ve taken me on long walks around town and I think it’s beautiful. I’ll be buying a guidebook myself so I can get around on my own and visit some museums over the summer (I want to get this one: http://www.momedia.nl/100procent-reisgidsen/100-brussel.html, I really like these guides, they now got it translated in English as well if you’re interested: http://www.amazon.co.uk/100-Per-Cent-Brussels-Explore/dp/9057670968)

if you are there on a friday evening, the Louvre is open ‘til midnight I think.. that’s great visiting that museum at night :-)
in centre pompidou is a lot of life at night aswel, but be careful coz it’s dangerous for tourists too.

Ah I didn’t know that, I was planning on visiting the Louvre anyways and doing that at night probably saves me some waiting line time, dankjewel :)

The Lapin Agile is a really fun little cabaret house very near the Sacre Coeur. Every evening except, Mondays I think? they sing and serve drinks from about 9pm until 2am. You get a free “house drink” with admission that is pretty nuts.
It’s a LOT of fun. Dark, music, alcohol, very very French.

I’ve never been to a cabaret before, you’ve got me curious now :) I’ll check this out!

I’ve never felt unsafe at night in Paris any of the many times I’ve traveled there alone. You simply need to apply the rules of being alone in any major city to Paris. That is, you travel only populated streets at night. If that’s not possible, you take cabs to your destinations.
The only place that I say you must absolutely avoid at night is the river bank.
What to do at night? I love live music, so I recommend seeing shows.

They make midnight strolls on the river bank seem so romantic in those old movies :) I guess that only works if you’re Gene Kelly…

I agree with bboysgirl….
Simply walking around Paris is entertainment for me.
As for dining alone, lots of people do it due to business travel – I’ve seen singles reading books while dining in some of the world’s finest restaurants. I find that I’m well cared for when I dine alone – in Paris or anywhere.

I’ve never dined out alone, so wasn’t sure how to go about it… I thought about bringing a book too, I think I’ll just do that! Thanks for the reassurance :)

I’ve never felt unsafe in MOST areas but like all large cities there are places not so safe and it’s easy to wander into them. Do you have an iphone? Rough Planet (I think) now has a Paris Ap with so much info on it you don’t need any other guide. I have gone there several times by myself. I like to visit the department stores Printemps and Galleries Lafayette in the evening as the tourists are gone and they are open until 10 pm usually. You can spend hours in those places even if you’re not buying anything. As to dining, make sure and get off the beaten path, tourist areas. Then just get a small table on the street and people watch, read, enjoy your meal. Parisian cafes (so long as your not in the tourist spots) are very amenable to single diners (particularly ladies of any age!) and unlike the US, you won’t ever feel rushed to give up your table. Take a book, get a carafe of wine, and enjoy your evening. Paris has many, many parks and green spaces where families, individuals, couples, everyone goes in the evening time. It’s also a great place to lay down on the grass or sit on a bench. Read up on the beautiful parks. As to nightlife, I would look on facebook and just as in the US there are clubs and promoters and you can get on their lists so as to be on the guest list. Oh and true about the river bank. Not safe anywhere at night. But a must do is to sit on the steps of the Trocadero and watch the tower light up. So beautiful. Again, bring a book and just relax. So many there doing the same thing. First thing when you arrive, go to a news kiosk and buy a Pariscope. It’s an English (make sure you get the one in English) paper telling all that is going on in the city that week such as concerts, exhibitions, fairs, and so on. You will find many things in there to do. Personally I enjoy traveling by myself as you don’t have to conform your schedule to anyone else and can do what suits YOU! In Paris, that’s a really good thing!

I was going to save an entire day for shopping, but it would be great if I could do that in the evenings, I didn’t know about those late opening hours! For dining, I think it’s just a click in my head I need to make, to just get over the uncomfortable feeling. I’ll bring my book and tell myself to stop fretting. I’ve been meaning to catch up on my reading anyway, what better time than on my vacation.
The Trocadero thing sounds very nice too, I’m hoping for good weather so I can do this.
And indeed, the reason I want to go alone is so I can do what I want to do without having to plan things in a committee… Thank you for the tips :)

I forgot to mention that you might also enjoy visiting
Pere Lachaise Cemetery.
http://www.paris.org/Expos/PereLachaise/
It is a beautiful, peaceful place especially if you go during the week. I go there to read. If you got to the above link you can download and print a map. This will save you from buying one there and they really are handy so that you can find the famous graves (Chopin, Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, etc.).
Regarding the weather, it is very iffy in Paris. Bring a small travel umbrella and keep it with you. Also there’s a reason Parisian women are always wearing scarves. The weather can change very quickly. I’ve learned to always have a large scarf tied to my purse. Not only does it look chic but believe me it’s come in handy.
The cemetery at Mont Martre is also beautiful. Parisians don’t view their cemeteries as morbid places but rather as public places, like parks.
Regarding shopping, you can also take the train to Marne Le Vallee. This is the biggest shopping mall in Europe and it is incredible. It’s made to look like a GIGANTIC old train station (like the D’Orsay) and has every manner of store in it from high end to groceries. The food court is nothing like the food courts in the US! Attached to it is an outlet village with high end outlet stores such as Celine, Burberry, NafNaf, Kenzo, etc. Here you can get actual very good buys. The nice thing as well about Marne Le Vallee is that it is open on Sundays. It would be a great thing to do by yourself. People are often put off when I say “mall” as they didn’t come to Paris to go to a mall but once they go there they feel differently!
If you need cosmetics, toiletries, etc. while you are in Paris that are not high end, don’t go in a Parfumerie as they typically only carry high end products. Go to MonoPrix. You see them everywhere. It’s a grocery store that also sells toiletries and even some clothing.
Bon Chance!

Ah, I’ve been to Père Lachaise before, it is beautiful! Based on that experience I was indeed thinking of checking the other cemetaries as well.
I think my train to Paris (the Thalys from Brussels) makes a stop at Marne La Vallée, I’m going to check to see if I can stop there for a couple of hours on my way back and catch the next train home :)

Yes I’m fairly certain your train does make a stop there. It’s a huge very modern station. I’m not sure if they will let you get off and back on another train there. However, there is an RER there that goes directly into Paris (I think into Chatelet can’t remember) so another option would be to get off, put your luggage in a locker and take the RER in although it wouldn’t be as nice as the Thalys of course).

Hello !
I am with conf: avoid the streets around Pigalle at night. I hate this part of the city. If you can find movies in English or if you’re good enought at French, you can definitely enjoy one of the many cinemas around town ;)
There is a “pub” I like in Saint-Germain-des-Prés: “Le Cool In”. It’s an Irish pub. Try to go there when there’s a rugby match :) The nearest subway station is Odeon. Let me know if you need more info about it.
I live alone in Paris but often eat at my places. If you like sushi (and do not mind spending 20€ for your meal), you can go to Planet Sushi at Place de la Bastille. There is a moving tray (I love those!) and you won’t have to eat in front of an empty chair (because there are seats directly facing the tray).
Or you could eat a sandwich and walk around town (Quartier Saint-Michel).
Have fun :)

The cinema sounds good indeed, my French is so-so but just soaking up the story can be really nice too.
I’m not a big rugby fan but if I’m in need of some English conversation I’ll know where to find it now :)
I love sushi, the sushi bar sounds like an excellent idea, thank you!
