Hi Carol,
Rome is awesome, wear a really comfy pair of shoes though even if you don’t want to do that much walking. I think it’s the reason God invented ‘party feet’.
Anyway, I stayed there in October 08 at a place called Overseas B&B. I booked a private double ensuite room and it cost about £30 per person per night.
The breakfast wasn’t good, unless you like chocolate coffee with chocolate bread, but the location was excellent! It’s right next to Termini train station and metro so you can get to everywhere really easily. You can walk to the coluseum from there and if you haven’t already been to Rome it is worth the walk.
Our room was very clean, the beds were comfy and the staff were incredibly helpful. On the downside, there is quite a bit of human traffic outside of your window, but you are next to the main train station in a big city, so it’s a little expected to be honest. I’d say that probably applies to anywhere you stay in Rome if you want to stay central.
They don’t mind at all either if you wish to leave your bags there on your last day after you’ve checked out. This is great because the last time I visited Rome, I had a few hours to kill before my flight and paid quite a bit to store my luggage at the train station.
Generally, it’s not The Ritz, but it is cheap, clean, cheerful and secure.
Hope that helps
:)
