If you’re into diving, you’ll want to spend some time on the Kona (west, dry) side of the island. Some fantastic spots there.
The Hilo side is the small town side, the wetter and green side, and the volcano side. Obviously, you could spend a day in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Other east side attractions include several waterfalls and lookout points along the Hamakua coastal drive. If you have kids or are into science, don’t miss the Imiloa Astronomy Center. And eat at Ken’s House of Pancakes at least once!

Hilo
the best diving in on the kona side. i recommend kealakekua bay in particular because it is a marine refuge. great for snorkeling and free diving.
on the hilo side, definitely check out richardsons beach. nice black sand, mellow vibe, nice swimming with turtles. check out the lava flowing into the ocean down at kalapana. if you are a hippie, you will love kehena beach down there. the farmers market in hilo is fun every wednesday and saturday, get some fresh fruit. there are also plenty of waterfalls along the hamakua coast. and watching the sun set from mauna kea is always a treat. maybe catch some yoga at the balancing monkey.
