We went to Halifax for our honeymoon in 2005. We actually stayed in Dartmouth, across the water from Halifax proper. Its much cheaper in Dartmouth. If you have a car, its like a 10 minute ride to Halifax downtown, and if you dont have a car, there are taxis everywhere, especially at the hotels.
As far as must see sights, The Citadel is pretty cool. There are also lots of cute shops down by the waterfront. We took the Harbour Hopper tour, which was really fun. Its an amphibious vehicle, and its takes you on a tour of the city and then goes into the water and brings you round the harbour as well. These are all rather touristy things, but we were on our honeymoon and thats what we were looking for.
Hope you have fun in Halifax!

there are some quirky little shops on Quinpool, near the Commons, and if you’re willing to drive a short way, Duncan Cove is spectacular, rocky and isolated. There are a couple of hostels in downtown HFX, too. One is on Barrington, the main drag.

I’m not sure about cheap hotels, I guess it depends on if you have a vehicle or are relying on public transit. I’m sure some research online will give you some ideas though. Just make sure you are looking at Halifax, NS and not UK. If you have any questions though let me know and I will see if I can be of any help, not sure.
If it’s open (May-November, I think) I would recommend the Public Gardens for sure. I also really like Peggy’s Cove which is a popular spot with both locals and tourists, however you will need a vehicle to get there…or maybe you can get lucky and find a tour bus going there. Not sure how that works though.
What types of things do you like to do? If I have a better idea of your interests I can maybe find out a little more for you.
Take care and blessings.

Unfortunately, I find that hotels here in Halifax are quite expensive, particularly if you want to stay downtown – which most people do because public transit is a bit of a nightmare here, especially for visitors.
Here are the names of the most popular hotels:
- Delta Barrington
- Delta Halifax
- Radisson Suite Hotel
- The Prince George
- Cambridge Suites
- Citadel Halifax Hotel
The Deltas aren’t too bad, price-wise. I like the Cambridge Suites.
Just outside of town, there are a few options, like the Future Inns, Holiday Inn Express, and Best Western Chocolate Lake. If you have a vehicle or a rental, these would be great options.
As far as must-sees:
- The Halifax Citadel
- Keith’s Brewery Tour
- Pier 21 – Canada’s Immigration Museum
- Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
- The Waterfront
- Peggy’s Cove
