Hi! I have had some much amazing food in Nawlins, but I do not recall seeing “gar” on a menu. I am sure the locals would know, go down there, and give it a try. Its crazy fun!

I’m guessing they mean alligator gar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator_gar
I’ve caught them in lakes on the gulf coast, but never eaten one. I haven’t seen them in the New Orleans restaurants I’ve visited, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find it—maybe at an out of the way place. You can definitely get alligator. Might find gar in the outdoor market there or you could always go fishing an hook one yourself.
I looked on chowhound.com and turned up these two restaurants, but they aren’t in New Orleans: BRS Seafood in Vacheria, LA
Family Grill, Simmesport, LA.

You may have more luck checking seafood markets in Cajun country (central Louisiana) than the more urbane creole kitchens of New Orleans.

Hi,
I actually pass a little gas station every day that sells gar sandwiches. I havent tried one though. At one time they had the best shrimp po-boys you could find anywhere….so I would take the chance on them. You can also buy live garfish here. (please make sure it is indeed live if you go this route….garfish go bad very quickly once they die- even if kept cold)
There are also two other little mom and pop restaurants in Vacherie, La. that I think sells it. One is called Spuddys, and the other is B&C Seafood.
For the earlier responder, yes, the OP is referring to alligator gar. And the name of the town you mention is Vacherie. I have never heard of BRS Seafood- only B&C, and Vacherie is a very small town. Its half way between New Orleans and B.R. on the Miss River in St James Parish.

I think they have them at Prejeans (pronounced pray-johns), but the only one i know of is in the Lafayette area

I don’t recall gar being on the menu in New Orleans. Sounds like a more traditional Cajun food. I actually “caught” gar as a kid in the Arkansas River. I’m qualifying that statement because we shot them with arrows. It was more of a target shoot.

Thanks for all of the answers! Sounds like a good reason for an excursion outside of the city.

Growing up there, I was always told they were “trash fish” that were thrown back… I think because they have so many tiny bones and there are so many beautiful fish readily available that are highly preferable.
