The Swiss are the world’s largest consumers of chocolate in the world, with an annual per capita consumption of 10 kilograms per year.

(Statistics indicate Chinese citizens annually consume less than 50 grams of chocolate per person.)

At an average chocolate consumption per person:
Switzerland (22.4 lbs.) Austria (20.1 lbs)and Ireland 19.5 lbs . The U.K. is seventh (17.5) and the U.S. is 11th (11.6 lbs).

Well, do not have to comment again. Absolutely true, roughtly 12kg per capita, followed by Austria*. But more important: quantity does not equal quality, except perhaps in this case ;-)

  • Depending on the source, Belgium is number two (Source: International Confectionery Association, Chocosuisse). Please also note that the figures mentioned above usually include chocolate sold to tourists visiting Switzerland).

The 12 kilos are calculated from all chocolate sold in Swiss stores. This also includes the quite large amount of chocolate bought by tourists. I sometimes see Asians or Americans buy huge amounts of chocolate which they probably bring home as a souvenir.

So an average Swiss does not eat even close to 12 kilos of chocolate a year. I mean, that would be 120 standard blocks of chocolate—per person! :)
