We have just returned from a cruise to Costa Maya. I absolutely LOVE IT. If you want developed city, touristy bars, and night life, you won’t like it much. (All they have is the port for the cruise ships)
But if you want to visit a fun, unspoiled beach, sit back eat a little, drink a little, ride some horses, snorkel and maybe pick up a souvenier or two; you will love it!
We didn’t sign up for the cruise’s horse riding excurion, so we asked at the port when we arrived. For $30 each, (instead of the cruise lines $99) we got an 1.5 hour horse ride on the beach and through a local town, by the edge of the jungle. It was great!
There were only about 6 vendors selling souveniers, but their prices are much better than what you will get in the actual port. Only one restuarant and 1 bar, but the food and drinks were good and reasonable, the people are very friendly.
You have to ask about a taxi to get to this beach. Its only about 1 mile away and it costs about $5US round trip. Bring plenty of cash, there are no ATMS or banks there.
It’s the kind of place I want to go and stay Forever!
I hope you have fun.
