Manhattan, New York City

SpaceNeedleLand asks,

“I am planning a (surprise) weekend trip to Manhattan for my wife's birthday. What are some truly unique, romantic things to do? Any pointers on romantic places to stay? I am looking around the 34th street area. Thanks!”

I’m not a good one to answer that question. I suppose anything by the water would be considered romantic.

So you have boat rides. Many are available in the Hudson river between 42nd and 36th I think. Also you have the South Street Seaport. Boat rides there. Not so many. And for a free ride, you have the Staten Island Ferry. Just no music. And at the end of the ferry ride I’ve been told there’s a minor league ballfield for Staten Island Yankees – just make sure they’re playing.

And if no boat. you can just walk along the river at any time, but sunset’s probably best. Lots of walkways. Hope she likes to walk.NYers walk alot.

West side has better light. Oooo. NY Trapeze school at Pier 40. Very nice.

Free kayaks are available in the Hudson at a few piers.

Restaurants high up with great views?

Grand Central Station? Maybe too much commotion and distractions.

Metropolitan Museum of Art in the evening. check the hours. Has a rooftop deck. very nice. overlooks Central Park.

Walks in Central Park.

Rowboat on the Central Park boat pond.

West Side’s 79th Street Boat Basin restaurant is unusual and a pretty setting.

Don’t be stuck on the 34th street area.

You can walk, cab, or subway or bus anywhere. You’re really in the middle of it. Lots of good things not far.

Hi Thanks for asking,

How about a horse and cart round central park, the cocktail bar in Grand Central Station. I stayed in the Pensylvania around 34th street….and it was pants. I then stayed in the Hotel Park Central which was lovely.

But the Paramount was much more romantic……235 west 46 street.

The Campbell Apartments in Grand Central.

Best burgers and shakes……..Island Burger on 9th Avenue…….Yummy.

The Empire State Building is near the area you are going. It is open to go up at night also which is really cool. You are also close to any plays and not too far from Times Square.

Horse and carriage rides are near the park usually not 34th street.

The Staten Island ferry is a nice ride, they do sell beer on the boat. SI Yanks are a limited season but yes they are right off the ferry to the right.

It is the last season for both the Yankees and Mets but unless she loves baseball none of that is romantic.

No hotels are truly romantic here. Pick one with good reviews and room service. Then head out.
