What do you want to know?
The university’s website is very accessible..

I just want to know anything that is not on the website…such as how is the atmosphere and what are the students there like…what is the administration like (organized and on top of everything or not), and how are the professors?
Thanks!

Ey Silly,
Well.. the short version is: I was going to be a temporary student at Leiden en
switch to Amsterdam after a year.. and now Ive worked my butt of all summer to
become a third year student here.
The atmosphere in the city is great! Really friendly, looks beautiful, lots of
history, nice people, great places to go out, go shop, and its located between
Amsterdam en Den Haag (and is on the “nachtnet” which means you can go home
even at 3 am, which is rather unique).
The students are really great and the main reason I stayed here. Made a lot of
friends who I think will be for a lifetime, very accepting (I just “came out”
1,5 years ago and either people were really nice and wanted to know everything
about it and tried to hook me up with their other gayfriends or they didn’t
understand why I told them because it was just so normal.. the city itself is
also very gay friendly (more so than amsterdam I think).. Not sure if this
applies to you but in my opinion it shows something about the people and Leiden
and even the professors, since I told one of them because of some research I
was doing and he’s still very happy to see me) Which brings me to the
professors: I have one who did a little dance when he saw me re-do a test which
I had flunked big time (flunked it again and the re-re-do he gave me a thumbs
up and “good luck”). Another one I swapped (illegal) films with (The course was
about Genderdifferences in the world and gerontology.. the movie was “Soylent
Green”. She said she would show it next year) Another course (again other
prof.) featured scenes from Life of Brian.
Ofcourse there are *ssholes, but 1 of the 2 is leaving this year.
I haven’t had problems with the administration (which is rather unique in my
schoolingcarreer). The uni uses blackboard which enables you to change your own
address and keep an eye on your grades. Im not sure if this is what you wanted
to know. Thing is every faculty has its own people, so psychology is different
from law.
If you have any problems you can go to the universitypsychologist or the dean
and they will help you as best as they can (really!! Ive tried ;) )
Also you can follow courses like time management and there’s a “homework”-group
where people call you and push you if youre having difficulties.
I really like it here and even convinced a highschool friend to move here.
If there is anything else you want to know (a little more specific maybe so I
wont start rambling about how great everything is) let me know..
What are you planning on Mastering?

Hi. Thanks for your answer. It is really helpful. I just wanted to get a general sense of what you thought of it, and you definitely answered my questions. It seems like a very open environment.
I’m currently getting my J.D. I deferred my admissions to the Masters of Art Programme in International Relations and Diplomacy. I am supposed to go through a formal deferral program sometime now, but have yet to hear from them. I’m trying to decide if i can combine my two degrees or will I have to go separately.
I hope everything is going well for you. It sounds like you are really enjoying your time there!!

I’m not sure I understand: two degrees are International Relations and Diplomacy? (sounds very interesting btw.)
Hope you hear something soon.
Maybe we can go for a drink when you get here. A toast to the goodness of Leiden ;)

I got my Master’s from Leiden this year and I studied abroad as well so I’ve got some experience with how the International Office works over here. Let me know if you still have questions, ok?

I got my MD from Leiden, as well as my MSc degree. Still live in Leiden although I now study in Rotterdam for my second MSc.
Will tell you all you want to know about Leiden, if it’s still applicable, the question is about a year old I think. It’s a wonderful town nonetheless. Let me know!
