I went in August a few years ago for a wedding of a college friend and it wasn’t overbearingly hot. The art museum is good there. And, Figlio’s is a pretty good Italian restaurant, too. They’re the ones that did the catering for the wedding. There are tons of options for shopping and other restaurants, though. I’m sure I haven’t had to explore all the tourist things, either. But, I really like KC a lot. I hope that you have fun.

Usually Spring and late Summer/early Fall are the best times to visit. June and July can get pretty hot and we have high humidity. KC is awesome. I’ve lived here most of my life and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

When you say warm do you mean hot? If you just mean warm like 70’s or 80’s you want to head out in the spring. It is pretty nice in April and May. Also, early fall is beautiful plus you get the leaves changing in October. If you are not used to humidity you probably don’t want to attempt summer. It is quite hot and humid. You might be interested in the 18th and Vine jazz district for music, the Plaza for high end shopping, Westport for food, coffee and drinks and the Power and Light district for nightlife. Also, if you like BBQ you MUST check out Arthur Bryant’s downtown. Do go during the day for lunch though. If you like flea markets the downtown flea market is pretty awesome and has some yummy eats as well as an awesome farmers market. Also, another point of interest might be Lawrence. It is about 45m west of KC. It is a great college town with fun local shopping and excellent local food. The Nelson Atkins Gallery is pretty cool as well as the Science Museum in Union Station. If you go in the late summer or early fall you can check out Starlite outdoor theater. Also in that area is the zoo. If you tell me what kind of food you are looking for I can give more suggestions. I lived there for 24 years so I am pretty familiar with the area ;)

Yes – temps in the 80s. I’d like to wander around in summer dresses or shorts.
I love reading Calvin Trillin so I’m happy to see your recommendation for Arthur Bryant’s :)
Thanks SimplyLiving for your help!

You will want to check out mid to late spring for 80’s. Just remember that if it is too late in the Spring that it will be HUMID! :) If you need anything else feel free to ask. I can post tons of stuff but want to make sure it is guided by what you are interested in. Enjoy and you are quite welcome!

Ha ha ha! Kansas City isn’t really known for their weather. I would say the spring or fall, because summer is SO miserably HOT and winter SO miserably COLD. But of course spring and fall are very short-lived and wet. So April or October are going to be your best bet probably. If it does rain (and it sure to at some point depending on how long you stay) perhaps you’ll get a chance to see one of the AWESOME electrical storms they have (and I miss..boo). Oh here’s another idea if you don’t mind cold too much, go during the Christmas shopping season when the (Country Club) Plaza is lit up for Christmas!
Highlights…some these kind folks have already touched on, like Nelson Atkins (they have a wonderful courtyard eatery that is in the middle of the gallery…delicious).
For nightlife…Westport! the bars are open until 3, they are all clustered together on Westport Road, you can tote your beer on the street (and see drunk girls struggling in their uber high heels). You MUST go to Harry’s Bar (501 Westport Rd) for good food and drinks, great atmosphere.
Dining- There are two restaruants tucked away down Pennsylvania Avenue (just off Westport Rd) called Mesa Wraps (like Chipotle but waaay better in my opinion), a cheap lunch alternative, and then Thai Place if you like Thai food. Some of the best I’ve ever had actually.
On the Plaza is a place called Baja600, if you go when it’s warm then you can dine out on the porch and they’ll make some excellent guacamole at your table. Irish pub called O’Dowds, they have the Guiness certified tap system.
Attractions:
Kansas City is the City of Fountains. There are tons of them everywhere. My favorites are on the Plaza. There is one in a park across from the big tower thingy call JC Nicols Park. Another of my favs is The Pamona (Ward Parkway & Wornall), The Block Fountain across from Union Station….who’m I kidding, they’re all my favorite. You can see a partial list here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Fountains_in_Kansas_City
I’m getting so nostalgic.
The Jazz Museum at 12th and Vine, The Scout statue in Penn Valley Park offers a beautiful view of the city skyline, I used to go up there at night when I needed a moment to myself, the view is awesome. You could go to the top of the Liberty Memorial (the phallic symbol up by Crowne Center) and get a bird’s eye view of the city.
OK I could go on and on. So I’m going to stop. Thanks for the walk down memory lane and if I can be of any further assistance just let me know. Kansas City is such a jewel box and no one (unless they’re from the general area of the center of the country) knows about it, so I feel it’s my duty to introduce the rest of the world to it. My story is that I moved there from coastal NC site unseen and I lived there for 8 months. So I have the perspective of a tourist that just stayed for an exceptionally long vacation (except I did have to work…lol).
The photo is of Union Station…in the fall…when my parents came to visit and it rained the entire time they were there :(

Wow – such great information. Thanks for the link for KC’s fountains. I’d heard about them before, but hadn’t realized just how many there are!!!
Awesome!
And you’re definitely into food (like me!) so thanks for listing so many eating spots. You’ve been very helpful.

I’m glad to be of assistance and you’re right there are SO many fountains. You could spend your entire time there just chasing fountains. I thought of another favorite of mine, it’s downtown across the street from the marriot hotel, it’s the entire city block long. One red friday (Chief home game weekends) they decided to put red dye in a bunch of the fountains…including that one..and it looks terrible…it looked like mayhem, end of the world style had occured and everyone was horrified…so they had to drain the fountains to get the red out, it was so funny.
If you have any particular types of food you’re into just let me know. For French the coolest is kind of downtown in a slighly run down section of town and it’s called Le Fou Frog, the atmosphere is pretty cool. If you go to KC you’re supposed to have BBQ, but I can’t really help you there (except to say the best thing from KC Masterpiece really is the sauce…lol) because I’m vegetarian. The famous steakhouse is also downtown (20th street) and called Hereford House, I seem to recall it was a little on the pricey side but we took my parents there and they liked it. Again the atmosphere is what I liked. Oh yeah and inside Union Station there is a restau that’s pretty fabu, ate there many times.
Anyway, have fun! I’m here if you have any questions during your planning, as I said aleady happy to help. I’m jealous if anything…lol

Weather-wise, depends. It all depends on what you have planned. You need to find out the starting and ending dates and hours for seasonal and recreational events. If you have a specific event you want to attend, knowing a scedule is a must. There are things going on all years long in Kansas City. This year they have had a wet Spring. Summers are usually hot and humid. Late Summer/early Fall is generally a good time to visit. There are even some great stuff going on in the winter months, but the weather is unpredictable.

I can’t disagree with anything that anyone above is saying, i do want to add that if you come come for the first Friday of every month. we have a section of town called the crossroads district and on the first Friday of every month all of the art galleries open up and it’s just an awesome atmosphere and they open rain or shine so it’s really a lot of fun and one of the funnest things that I love to do when I get the chance.

OMG I can’t believe I forgot to mention Jerusalem Cafe! Good job!
And you silly folks and your humidity…hahaha…you need to come to the south (NC, SC, GA, AL, Louisiana) if you think KC’s got humidity…lol.
All in good fun though, yeah it is HOT HOT HOT in the summer no doubt. And that’s the only time the wind doesn’t blow too :)
