A question about this place:
My Mum&I are trying to pick a hotel, and we're currently choosing between Embassy Suites and the Gran Melia Mexico Reforma? Anyone have any advice on which to choose? Or is there a great alternative that doesn't break the bank?! Thanks!

I was happy at Hotel Milan. We stayed for 2 weeks in May 2007. It was recommended by a friend who lived in Mexico City for a few years. The hotel itself is a little worn and bland, but it’s relatively comfortable and the price is right. Seemed like a better choice than anything downtown. Great neighborhood (Colonia Roma) for strolling and restaurants. A few blocks from the excellent Pozoleria Tizka—excellent Pozole Verde. Convenient to subways and quick taxi to Centro Historico.

Twice in the past I have had good experiences staying at the Hotel Monte Carlo. It is reasonably priced and near the central zocalo. However, I have seen some reviews recently that complained of bed bugs. Mind you, even very fancy hotels can have bed bugs too.

On one occasion I have stayed at the Hotel Majestic, which overlooks the central zocalo. It was very nice, and the rates are not bad.

I’ve stayed at Hotel Isabella on numerous occasions.

It isn’t great.

It isn’t horrible.

It is fine – a little funky, but it feels like Mexico City, not like some fancy cookie-cutter hotel that could be anywhere in the world.

They have an inexpensive tasty restaurant too.

It depends on what your needs are.

Either hotel on Reforma is going to be nice and comfortable, but there is not much to see immediately around those hotels, and you may feel its more convenient to use hotel taxis.

The suggestions downtown, closer to the Zocalo (and also in the Roma) are perfect if you want to walk out of your hotel and wander around a historic downtown center, and go to museums, cafes, restaurants and shopping…

Also downtown there are several different metro lines that are close to each other, so you can plan excursions on metro.

The Roma is much more laidback, not full of people like downtown is. It’s also a great neighborhood to be situated in, there are many cafes and shops and parks, etc.

I’m not informed about hotel prices, but I’m SURE there are many hotels in the downtown area that are much more affordable than the big chain ones on Reforma… the above suggestions sound good!

Good luck, have fun!
