Puerto Plata is a really great part of DR, but I’ve never been able to stay two weeks there. It’s hard. If you don’t mind traveling outward I would go to Sosua and Santo Domingo maybe even into Santiago

Santo Domingo
you should try and make it to cabarete,
it’s the most “international” tourist nightlife you’ll get in DR.

Thanks, I’ll check it out.
In terms of the nationalities of holiday makers you get in the DR, is it mostly Americans or Europeans, or do you get a fair mixture of the two?

Do some kind of excursion: http://www.therealdr.com/excursions.html
I did the Jeep Safari and Catamaran/snorkeling and both were amazing.

Thanks. I got a list of excursions from the holiday company some of which sound rather amusing. One is this ‘Monster Truck Safari’:
“You will experience first hand the rural lifestyle of the Dominican people.”
Yeah…in a monster truck.

Definitely check out Sosua. It’s got enough tourism to feel comfortable, but there are also native locals and a bunch of expats from all over Europe and North America. It’s a really interesting community.

Hi I went to Puerto Plata and the best excursion is the one to paradise island. its a 40/50 foot long sandbank out in the ocean and is soooo beautiful. you can do snorkelling and we convinced our guide to bring back a bottle of rum on the coach so by time we got back to hotel were very drunk!!

Gosh, how to answer! I definately enjoyed my visit to Puerto Plata but Santo Domingo is what lingered with me, although that may be because I stayed there the longest.
If you get a chance, I’d say hop over to Haiti, just for a little visit, although I heard that there’s some revolutionary problems there – I’m not keeping up now a days so I’m not too sure – because that really changed my outlook.
There was a goregous waterfall with a lovely pool in this area called Jucum but I’m not sure where exactly that is.
Anyways, hope you enjoy your stay!
