I would recommend to see some alligator farms on Tamiami trail, go to see Key Biscayne, and visit Las Olas boulevard in Fort Lauderdale at Saturday night.
And try to get some Cuban food outside the South Beach. :o)

You know, I’m a little bit afraid of Fort Lauderdale. I had a pretty scary experience last time I was there involving a flasher at a red light. ;)
I didn’t consider an alligator farm. Thanks for that!

Avoid any of the restaurants and venues on Ocean Drive such as the Clevelander other than taking a stroll during the day to check things out. The Delano is lovely but expect to pay $18 per drink with no place to sit down. It is also jammed with tourists. I recommend seeing it during the day. Lincoln Road is where you will find better restaurants and less tourists than Ocean Drive (at least of the frat kind) plus tons of great restaurants and shops. The further you get from Ocean Drive, the nicer it is. Espanola Way is also lovely with restaurants, shops and atmosphere plus historic architecture. Joes Stone Crab has a carry out and their food is actually fabulous. Grab your carry out and head over to watch the cruise ships sail out starting at about 4:30 pm. For classic Cuban food, head for Versailles in Little Havana. Any cabbie will know where it is. Remember that renting chairs and umbrellas on the beach is very expensive. Bring your own beach towels. Regarding nightclubs, there are lots that have excellent djs because Miami is a locus for talent without the lines, $20 entrance fees, and $15 drinks. Do some research online and you will find lots of sites recommending clubs.

Wow… you nailed it. Thanks! Espanola Way is on our list, as is Cuban food!
Do you know what’s up with Art Basel? I’ve heard there is a permanent location now – not just the annual exhibition.
Also, since you seem to understand what it is we’re trying to avoid, can you recommend a salsa club? We have a fantasy about getting dressed up and going to a salsa club by the beach with a live band, but don’t want to end up in an “unts unts” club, if that makes sense. ;)
I owe you one. Let me know if you ever need advise on NYC!

Club Aché
3425 Collins Ave., Miami Beach
This club is located on TOP of Café Nostalgia, facing Collins. While it is in Miami Beach it is not a tourist spot so much at all and they usually have really good live salsa bands. Contact them directly for their calendar. Have fun!
