A question about this place:
My friend and I are planning a two-week trip to Tokyo in October and we're hoping to find some dance/nightclubs to visit. Any suggestions?

I don’t know any in particular, but just head to Roppongi and walk down any street there – you’ll literally be dragged into the first club you stumble past by the guy at the door so there’s no need to look, they’ll find you!

There is a very nice bar called Propaganda near the Roppongi train station. It’s a great place to start you up for the night.

I agree! There are tons of bars in Roppongi. But I suggest trying to find a bar where you can pay a cover charge then get free drinks, called nomihodi. Because drinks in roppongi are crazy expensive.

haha. my friends and i really liked one in roppongi called lexington queen. it’s actually in a basement down an alley (hard to find, but really safe—a good, nonsketchy crowd). ask around for directions. it was 3000 yen (about 30 bucks) for all-you-can-drink, all night (clubs are open until 5am there). print a coupon off the internet and use it during the week, and the cover drops to about $5.

it’s a silly club, but good for getting drunk with friends and dancing. word of warning though… the crowd is mainly foreigners, expats, military. if you’re looking for an “authentic” experience, this might not be the place.

When I was there I went to a bunch of pubs which I found to be fun for a “guys night out” kind of thing. I can’t remember the name of them but if you’re out for a more “dance/rave/techno” scene, there is a club in Roppongi called Gas Panic which is really good and popular. As most people have said Roppongi is pretty much the party district, go there and you will most likely find something you like.

If you are into techno, I would recommend either Womb- one of the best clubs in the world, but small so often too crowded, even for a club- or Ageha- also a great club, not quite as stylish as Womb but much larger so never crowded to the point of being stiffling.

Womb is in Shibuya. Ageha’s a bit out of the way- I think maybe it was in Shinkiba.

I think which of those clubs you choose comes down to which has the better act performing that night. You can find that info on their Web-sites.

Roppongi would be the place to be for most people, but you can find a few quaint places in other districts in Tokyo. My husband and I found a lovely little bar/disco in the Shimbashi district right behind Shimbashi Station, called Crow’s Forest. They play all sorts of music and is usually lively on Friday and Saturday evenings. The drinks are also not too expensive; normally around 500 yen.

I hope this helps.
